Anyone watching SAS Rogue heroes?

Absolutely, it's all about the ratings and I am totally fine with that and I know with a lot of it they actually tone it down. Talking to friends locally generally when TV shows selection process stuff it is nowhere near as bad as real life.

I'm glad we have one of most elite forces in the world and many of these people are involved in stuff that most of us don't even want to think actually happens in the real world.

The one thing that I've heard loads of times is "If someone you've just met tells you they are in/were in the regiment then it's 99% certain there weren't"

We know a regiment wife who works in an environment where she came into contact with wannabes and often had to listen to people telling her they were regiment.

Well I was in school with one of the lads who never "got away", same year as me. Sad to read how he died..

If you want to read a good book about the North Africa campaign, read Popski’s Private Army by Vladimir Peniakoff DSO,MC. I’m just rereading it having first read it 50 years ago, after watching SAS Rogue Heroes.

And if you want to read about Africa in later years "No mean soldier" by Peter McAleese who was in the SAS a couple of times. He even had a pub in Birmingham at one time!

I had a problem with the soundtrack.

Good music without a doubt but didn't work for me in the context.

Once they'd got past calling it 'L' Detachment Special Air Service Brigade they had 1SAS and 2SAS (initially run by David Stirling's brother). There were also 3 and 4SAS which were French and Belgian units.
At the end of the war the regiment was disbanded (allegedly, due to petty beaurocracy among the top brass) but then the Artist's Rifles TA detachment was renamed as 21SAS (an amalgamation of 2 and 1 SAS). I guess (as this book ends there) 22 and any other detachments follow from that.

I was expecting something a little more somber, as befits the best fighting regiment in the world, but maybe this series is closer to the truth.

I must admit I assumed it was another of the reality type shows I didn't realise it was drama based on actual events. Will have a watch.

It's based around the research in the documentary I posted earlier. It's a good watch.

An interesting anecdote.

Stirling was invited to dinner at the Cairo embassy. Present was Churchill, Alexander, and Smuts (who replaced Auchinleck).
Stirling asked for their autographs. Later he added, at the top of the piece of paper, words to the effect that - "The bearer of this is to be given every help and assistance."

Apparently they never had an supply issues after that
