Anyone Visited one of our (old) Nuclear Power Stations?

Think the nuclear power plants cancelled public visits a few years back. This was as a result of certain newly arrived citizens and their terrorist activities. Not sure if this has been relaxed of late, though I doubt it.

When i went to Hinkley, there was a bit of pre-visit checking.

I had the opportunity to go again, at last min, but wasnt able to as, whilst id been checked for the first visit, they wanted to do the (same) check again for the re-visit, and there wasnt time.

If your in to the nuclear engineering thing then Culham is worth a visit if you get the chance. It's where they're doing all the Fusion stuff.

I did a bit of work there at one point, and went to a seminar there where they showed everyone round.

Very interesting and looks like they do public tours.

Went to Hartlepool when I was at college, was a good tour round the whole place, but Bering collage age at the time found the visit to the brewery more interesting

When I was still in short shorts went on a public tour of Sizewell A with Mum and sister. When Dad finished running the tests in the reactor room (they'd bought one of our loggers to run some tests on the speed of dropping the control rods into the core) then we as a family got a private tour of Sizewell B which wasn't publicly accessible back then.

Doubt there’s anything worthwhile to see, I’d imagine it’s all very touristy.
I must admit, I do get sick of seeing the inside of power stations, they arent as exciting as folk think they’re going to be. Even when they’re in bits!

I've been to the drop-in visitors center at Sellafield and taken the limited tour with the guide on the bus, she stated Sellafield had a perfect safety record, she also got very flustered when I asked about the leak at Windscale.

For those that don't know Windscale and Sellerfield are the same place, conviently renamed after all the fuss died down...

I believe they do a tour of some of the plant, but that has to be pre-arranged in advance with lots of personal sercuity checks.

The fire that broke out in the "pile" (?) in 1957(?) came very close to being a total disaster. It was an air-cooled graphite reactor, stuffed full or uranium fuel pins and the graphite started burning merrily! They were developing things as fast as they could (lacking understanding) in order to make plutonium and get us a Bomb! The last-minute addition of huge filters to the chimney stack was largely responsible for saving the day, that and the incredible bravery of the staff there

I was three years old at the time and lived in the north of England, which could explain a lot .

I flew nearly over Sellafield, just deliberately sticking exactly to the red outline on the aviation map.
Probably not the first nor the last to do that.

I had a tour around Sizewell when I went for a job interview many years ago.
Wasn't paying all that much attention to the visitors centre to be honest but I seem to recall it being a bit cheesy and aimed more at school trips - however I did get a tour of the site as well which was interesting.

In some ways I regret not taking it, on the other hand, with my luck..., probably for the best.
Nobody needs a real life Homer anyway.

I’ve done the tour at Dinorwig (electric mountain) the pumped hydro quick response station.

Was quite nice seeing it as my dad worked on the construction of it.

would love to go again but they dont have tours now.

My aunt lived in Millom and my cousins went to the local schools, with kids from the Windscale/Sellerfield area who were bussed into school, some of whose parents worked in the plant.

One father called his wife and told her to take the kids to her mothers, in newly washed clothes to her mothers who lived in the Devon/Cornwall area, then burn their clothes on arrival, buy all brand new clothes and not to come back home until he told her it was safe. My cousins friends missed a fair amount of school that year, it was not a good time to live in the East of the Lake District...

I toured Dungeness in ‘86,an eye opener would like to go again or any other.
Watched part of a programme last night on Chernobyl and revealed KGB mistakes and cover ups!

Bizarre, I toured Dungeness probably the same year on an A Level school trip. It wasn't running but it was really interesting
