Anyone used these- Nut splitters?

Whats wrong with a chisel!

I've used another version of the same thing and seemed to work ok, wore quickly though.

I've had a similar (not Teng) set for many years, worth their weight when you can't get in with grinder, hacksaw etc.

Have used a very cheep version and worked well. Note when you start try and get the body of the splitter down the nut as much as possible and as yo tighten check it does not ride up if necessary light tap to seat it back down. If nut is rusted (not just seized) onto stud/bolt then sometimes helps once split oneside to flip and split from other side.

After a little practice they work well. Ideal for nuts that are not on a solid chunk of metalwork and won't take the pounding of a hammer and chisel.

My experience of nut splitters is that whenever you want/need one there's no room to use 'em and/or the nut is flanged. The few times that a fastener that's realtively easy to get at won't budge it's ALWAYS a bolt into a captive nut/tapped hole and ALWAYS eleventy million miles long

Saved me a few times while working on the defender! Mine are round though, not straight cut like the ones in the link. I dunno if that would cause problems getting into tight spaces or not!

Don't buy cheapo types, they might as well be made of chocolate !! The blades and anvils will wear or deform quickly. I have some proper ones and where they can be used they're invaluable. Mine are the open type though. The beauty of them is that they don't involve striking, loads of sparks or heat etc, so the potential for collateral damage is almost nil.

I have never used any of these, we generally use a small 3" disc air cut-off saw, does the trick neatly enough, as others have said, those tools like they would be difficult to access in some cases. As tigler has said though, they have the advantage of far less collateral damage than a cutter!

Tigler, i thought Teng tools where decent, could you recommend a brand that makes decent ones please?

I never like to knock specific brands of tools for fear of upsetting someone but Teng, IMHO, are not that good, and thats being kind ! They are the only tools I've ever used that have broken in normal use, thats sockets, ring and open end wrenches and ratchets.
They weren't mine, they were the shop tools at a friends place.
Nut splitters, one name, Sykes Pickavant, the hydraulic type.

i have some teng sockets ,no problems with them either!

no doubt about sykes pickavant being good stuff ,but a hydraulic jobbie would be way more expensive than the simple teng jobbie .

know which id go for .... unless money was no object

I have some Teng tools, can't fault them.

See, it's a can of worms !! Much depends on the working environment, day in, day out garage or workshop use is a different world to hobby use.

Anyway, my Sykes Pickavant nut splitters are even better than a Snap-On one I also have The Snap-Ons jaw is soft and I've replaced it twice, FOC of course much to Snap-Ons surprise, the Sykes just laugh at anything I've shown them so far.
That is a first for Snap-On though, most of my stuff is Snap-On and it's the first problem I've had. I'm convinced it's been faulty hardening on the splitter.

I've used one years ago but I just use a chisel, grinder or drill these days.
