I have a warehouse half full of stuff that has been rejected by customs in the EU. It gets returned to us. Customer refuses to pay. Yes we have the right to dispose of the goods to reclaim costs but usually we lose out.

Not being blinkered, but awake enough to see that this is pure spite and vitriol from the SS, for cutting off their major source of trough funding (in theory at least). The cure is not to roll over and give in to their blackmail and intimidation, but to develop worldwide markets instead. The SS need US, not the other way around.

A great example is one of our customers sending pallets of handmade cakes. She didn't ship many - perhaps 10 or 12 a year. But when you think there are thousands and thousands of small businesses like this you realise just how much the UK has lost out.

She used to pay £121 for a pallet to Berlin. NO paperwork at all needed - as easy as shipping to Birmingham.
Price now £200 for shipping.
Health and phytosanitary checks along with vet inspection as product contains milk and eggs - £250
German customs clearance £100
UK export paperwork £40

A friend used to sell into Europe high end leather goods made in a workshop in Manchester, he used to load up a van and deliver them to small commercial buyers in France and Germany, his company employs five people, now it is just not worth his while so his market shrank. Only large companies that have a big compliment of admin staff and offices in the EU can make sales into Europe worthwhile, large companies such as Ineos.

Such a success hes pulled the plug. He’s an advocate of keep it simple and do it well. Thats how he turns failing large companies in to successful ones.
The SS is a good description of what we call Europe. Its no longer about free trade, but a political ideology. Hence some people's desire to not be controlled from elsewhere. The reality we ended up with was being double controlled, from elsewhere and own set of muppets. It would be the makings of a superb spoof TV show if it wasnt true.

My take on this is that now we are out we don't have to send them £billions of our (your) money a year, don't have to listen to the constant stream of dictats from the blonde bombshell (Vonderlying) and others telling us what to do. Yes numerous small businesses are losing out, but a @fizzy mentioned the EU decided to punish us, and due to various forces within and without the g.ment at the time we didn't react in kind.. And at the time, my take was it could take 20 years for us to properly shake off the years of control by a foreign force, that was before the remoaners weakened our hand, then COVID came along..
And talking of the dreaded cv19, without leaving we would not have been able to vaccinate the millions when we did. Rose tinted specs anyone?

Anti importists like the trumpster are right with their “make it here” approach, crank up production on home soil with all the benefits that will bring. At that show a bunch of us formed the wooden boatbuilders trade association to get represented.
It turned out that the British marine industries federation were busily stitching all small manufacturers up along with the RYA (royal yachting assoc) & government. Us getting involved watered some of the more draconian proposals down but we couldnt stop it. The RCD became mandatory in 1998 & it decimated the boatbuilding industry, designed to help big business it heaped costs upon small companies & low volume builders like myself to the point most packed it in.
Now we have left the EU we apparently have to enact an identical piece of beaurocracy to run parralell with the RCD when It should simply have been abolished. Did the rcd make boats safer? No. Nothing but absolute beaurocracy for its own sake.
Saying that it is better to be in the tent ******* out than outside trying to pee in.

Funnily enough a couple of people at work insisted that the EU would have to give us preferential treatment as we bought German cars, they were wrong.

Bottom line is the EU was and still is our biggest trading partner and we need them to survive, we are no longer a self sufficient country. It makes no difference whether we are in or out of the EU, we still have to play by their rules as they are considerably bigger than we are but at least when we were in we had some input, now we are merely a small trading partner that they don't need to trade with to survive.
Anyone who thinks that by leaving the EU we would regain our sovereignty which translates as being able to dictate to the rest of the world was wrong, we are a small country that loses more of its significance every time we detach ourselves from other countries.

We had the 'BS' British Standards and made importers follow them, now the EU are doing much the same and people complain.

It should but if we had in effect blocked imports of food from the EU everyone would have been baying for Boris's blood. Far better to create a one way street not in our favour and leave the masses thinking everything is rosy
