Anyone Seen This? Wire Feed Motor Slows and Speeds Up (No wire fitted).

I have an Eastwood Mig 175 which I think has a problem maybe from new. Great for spot welding, but run a weld and it all goes Pete tong.

A closer look with the wire removed shows pulling the trigger starts the wire at the set speed, but after a few seconds it slows then speeds up again back to speed, then slows again.

Does this with no wire fitted - looking at the wire feeder, board and wire speed knob as a starter - has anyone had this?

Check for bad contacts on the connections to the wire feed motor board, and the wire feed motor. Also give the wire speed knob a few turns back and forth, to clean the internal contacts. Does the wire feed motor's speed alter if any wires are moved?

Hello and welcome, both, to the Forum !

The fact that the wirespeed varies in this way even with no wire fitted rules out the usual suspects ( which would be drag on the wire supply spool spindle brake, a dirty liner in the torch, or wrong tip size ).
That leaves the motor itself, the speed control circuit, or the power source for the motor.
The welder is an inverter, so the power and speed control is probably all integrated into one large board, along with everything else.

If you apply pressure to the feed roller with a gloved hand, press the trigger, and vary the speed control, can you feel consistent torque?

The motor may be 12v or 24v. You could test it by disconnecting both wires from the terminals of the motor, and temporarily driving it from a 12 volt battery. Depending on the rated voltage, it should run at full or half speed, but that speed should be constant and it should have adequate and constant torque.
