I expect he has to put up with every single customer saying that

Only if that electrician hadn't heard of electro-permanent magnets. For elfin safety reasons a combination of permanent and electro magnets can be used so that power is required to force the permanent magnets to let go. If the power is cut, the permanent magnets maintain their grip.

Nice backpedal but I don't buy it. The logic of your statement does not support that interpretation.

OTOH it did make me look up electro permanent magnets which is a fascinating subject in its own right.
