there is a course starting at the local Cheshire college on the Wirral at Capenhurst in January, it had 3 TIG machines there. If you go in around December and ask about the beginners welding course, you must get your name down early, as the TIG is very popular, and maybe even ask to see "Alf" its the first room on your left as you go past reception.

believe me ac tig is a different ball game i have done it but want to no how to do it properly. im coded on carbon and stainless steel, and as for the course they would be teaching me things that i already no unless the course was specifically for aluminum, i was just after a good aluminum welder showing me for half an hour and the set is a 200amp ac/dc cobel
I think TIG Paul or maybe hotrodder posted up some "starter" settings for AC recently. Basic differences will be cleaning setting, switched to AC, more amps for a given thickness, ceramic preparation. Really should be no big deal -- if you can gas or DC aluminium it should be one hell of a lot easier! Hardest thing is working out what the weldpool is doing in aluminium.
Your machine is essentially a clone of some of the more recent Miller sets -- lots of manuals and stuff on their site.

If you are already coded then no problem, just go in and see Alf, and tell him what your needs are. He will see you get on the correct evening class and show you how to DC TIG on ally. He is one of those guys who can weld on all metals with all machines to a high standard.

Its impossible for anyone to say what is the 'best' setting! As you will know from your experience with DC tig, there are variables which are specific to you as a welder and also the local conditions, such as thickness of plate, joint fit up etc.
I would suggest, AC Balance on about 35% (on + Cycle) and around 80 Hz AC Frequency.
Have a much squarer torch angle that you would normally on DC.
Make sure ALL material to be welded is cleaned before hand as Alu is much less forgiving that Steel or CrNi for dirt and grease.
Welding current will purely be dependant on material thickness and physical size of the job to be welded, as Alu is excellent conductor of heat you will need more that equivalent thickness's on DC.

Yeah whatever. the point is if you want someone to show you who knows how to do it this is your guy. He could weld an brick to an apple.
Dunno what sort of rod he'd use though.
