I'd expect anything dangerous to be removed and disposed of correctly, rather than being dumped in a skip.

That’s what you would hope but I’m not confident. I’ve done Hazmat Surveys at two hospitals and the NPL in Teddington. You’d be surprised how much hazardous and radioactive material has been skipped and is unaccounted for

An old drift mine near here was decommissioned and sealed off years ago and a friend of mine who was driving lorries at the time said he was taking low level radioactive material from the hospital to be dumped in there before it was sealed off.

I was waiting to speak to a hospital administrator about phones for a ward that was going to be converted into an admin office and she was discussing how much it was costing to hire the skips to get rid of the beds, lamps, curtain rails, commode chairs, over bed tables etc., I mention that if she rang one of the metal recyclers they would supply a skip and pay for the contents, she looked at me doubtfully but about 3 weeks later I got a lovely email from her saying my suggestion had turned a £3500 bill into a £2000 credit.
If you speak to the right person most hospitals are happy for you to take away stuff as it means they don't have to pay someone to take it way, I've had a electric adjustable bed that I turned into a welding table, countless wheelchairs for projects, a small compressor from a dental centre that I use for my airbrush, loads of stainless steel cabinets that I've cut up and reused, it all just gets lobbed into the general waste skip along with broken chairs etc.

The reality is businesses are only too happy to get rid of their waste, as long as you're not unloading 5 tonnes of metal from their recycling skip.

Theoretically once it's in the skip it is the property of the skip supplier and you could be prosecuted for trespassing but I've never heard of it happening. A local skip supplier was prosecuted last year for helping himself to a skip full of turnings outside an engineering firm. In his defence he said he thought he was doing them a favour taking it away ( Yeah right, scrap price and a free skip )

I think the first item is to measure X-ray dosage, by ionisation, for radio therapy.

The second is certainly a radiation detector, used for measuring low energy X-rays.

The Diamentor is for measuring patient radiation exposure. Possibly used with No. 1.

Not sure I’d be dicking with anything related to radiology unless I knew specifically what it’s job was and the likelihood of it being irradiated. Was it In India or similar a few years back where someone rifling through a skip at a derelict hospital found a nice metallic looking substance in a machine so took it home and gave bits to friends and neighbours etc and managed to irradiate half of the village with the abandoned X-ray source that it actually was

Pretty sure it was in San Paulo,Brazil about 25 years ago, someone found a radicactive source container from an xray machine & took it home, they cut it open & spilt the pretty mauve glowing powder, kids played with it & it got all over the village then the burns & horror started.

Something similar happened in Mexico. A radioactive source was weighed in, got into the waste metal and was turned into rebar. Many many buildings are now contaminated
