Anyone know what this is?

Acquired from a (now closed) hospital skip, looks interesting but I've no idea what any or it is of what it's for, first up, an "X ray chamber".


Next, a "scintillation meter", I suspect this is the "counter" part of a Geiger counter and should be connected to a Geiger-Möller tube to work?

The connector on the end of the coiled cable, looks familiar but I can't think what it's called, used on aerials sometimes I think.


And finally, this;

I googled this one a while ago and found a newer version of it is still produced but I'm not entirely certain what it's for or what plugs in. Something to do with dosemetery I think.

I think the first item is to measure X-ray dosage, by ionisation, for radio therapy.

The second is certainly a radiation detector, used for measuring low energy X-rays.

The Diamentor is for measuring patient radiation exposure. Possibly used with No. 1.

Well, sort of, a bloke in painted overalls said it was fine but it's probably not really up to him.

Close! Looks similar inside but it's threaded rather than a bayonet, turns out you get TNC too, I think its that.

During late 70's one office (government) I was working had all the perfect old type flourescent lights changed for modern units. The old where simply chucked in a skip but when we asked if you could have them for garages etc the answer was no. However the chap said he was going for a cuppa and didn't know how many there were in the skip so wouldn't know if some were taken ! Served me well in my garage for many years until a refit

I'm not gonna go licking it but I'd expect it to be fairly safe. It looks like it might be more specifically called a "parallel plate chamber", if I can find an adapter I'll see if it does anything plugged into the meter.

I only say that as I don’t know exactly what it has been used for. Best to be careful if unsure

Not sure I’d be dicking with anything related to radiology unless I knew specifically what it’s job was and the likelihood of it being irradiated. Was it In India or similar a few years back where someone rifling through a skip at a derelict hospital found a nice metallic looking substance in a machine so took it home and gave bits to friends and neighbours etc and managed to irradiate half of the village with the abandoned X-ray source that it actually was

I'd expect anything dangerous to be removed and disposed of correctly, rather than being dumped in a skip.

Still probably not a good idea to be stealing easily identifiable stuff and openly posting about it on public forums though.
Where's our resident X-ray equipment expert when you need him?

Old medical X-ray stuff is not dangerous, there are no radioactive components, even the generator is not harmful once the power is turned off. Alpha, Beta, Gamma and (some) X rays that are the product of nuclear decay are the dangerous ones because then you have radioactive material which continues to emit potentially harmful radiation.

Agree. Anything dodgy would have been removed for safe disposal, or balls (insert - legal action) would roll (insert - against Hospital).
