Anyone know old AEC engines?

I may have bought a routemaster bus, no engine, gearbox, or windows, bargain, should have an AEC AV590, or a few had AV690 but they are hard to find, I have found an AV505, very little info out there, question is how similar are they, block style and bellhousing bolts?
591/691 are wet liner, 505 is dry liner,

Dim memorys from a long time ago but I think the 505 has a shorter block, but with a welder and a few visits to scrap yards anything is possible.

One of my workmates woke up to find he had bought a baby grand piano, it was collect only from Brighton, he lived in Birmingham and only owned a small hatchback, he couldn't even play a piano

I would check if they are the same or similar to the Leyland bus/truck motors.
A quick look and the designations are similar, maybe more Leylands than AEC
A mate has a Leyland Panther that came with a 680 and he fitted a TL11 which flies up hills and down dales.

The AV505 was fitted to Guy Big J’s and Albion Reivers too, I used to work them but was a very long time ago.

I briefly wondered why but just thought of some of my collectables, still regret not buying a Bedford RL when a nice one came along!

Don't know anything about AECs but Leyland made a 690 which was renamed the TL11. They also moved production of an AEC engine to Leyland when the AEC factory closed, can't remember what that one was called

I'd have a chat with the bus museum chaps at Canvey. Also, as Mick Annick says, if you look at what other AEC lorries had these engines then you might find one a lot cheaper than a bus one. Trouble is, all AEC stuff is very long in the tooth and probably why they started the re-engine programme.

The Leyland 680 became the TL11(pile of c**p and a pig to work on), the AEC 760 became the Leyland L12 and TL12 but I don't know what became of the AEC505, like a lot of AEC/Leyland production it became DAF.

T stands for turbo, the 680 was normally aspirated, 690 a turbo. Turbos had much stronger engine internals. 600 series was regarded as a good engine and made for a long time, (started in 1947 and seems to still be going in India) I can't see the TL 11 being much different, but I had gone from production work to maintenance by the time they changed the name to TL11.

Having been involved in modifying a routemaster engine to fit an AEC regent V , I have asked my bus garage friends at GVVT in Glasgow and Angus Transport Group for their thoughts . As they have a fair few AEC of various flavours . Initial feedback is the AV505 may be underpowered .
