I'm interested to hear any replies as I'm a novice but one thing comes to mind first, how is your bottom end 
. Is it standard or do you have a balanced crank, stronger rods n bolts ect to cope with the extra power.
I also wonder how the ecu copes with the new different feedback from O2 sensor (if there is any)

the bottom end is std but fresh it should be ok for reasonable abuse. the rods are the weack point they'll stick 300 ftlbs ish before they give up, and if i keep the revs sensible the bolts won't snap. but even if the motor dose pop it's not the end of the world as i want to put a diffrent bottom end in it away at some point soon. ether a 2ltr with longet rods or an overbored 1.8 ether way something thats a bit more rev happy.
the ECU shouldn't have any problems hopefully. i'm running megasquirt ( 2extra ) it seems to have some provion for nitrus controll. once your mapping is done you don't actauly even need a lambda tho i do run one but you can limute the maximum change the lambda can make on exhaust gas oxygen and even disable it under various conditions

if you want over 200bhp put a 1.8 20vt in, it is the cheepst way to power in the long run.
nitrous is fantastic but can be costly in gas and in parts but is very good for a bit of power. a rough rule of thumb is half the original engine power can be put in with gas . golf 16v was 139 = 70bhp , but i know for a fact and from experience a abf engine will take 200 of gas as will as a eton m45 supercharger on a standard engine. i used to run that combination on a drag car and it did over 1500 runs on the 1/4 mile at york.
for a itb engine you will need individual port injection , that is more ££££. use a wet system don't even think of dry.
a small amount of gas will not kill the bottom end , when you get gready it will kill the piston ring lands . ecu will generally be fine if the mixture in the gas jet is correct , right fuel pressure for gas jet size and so on.
the best thing to have is a nitrous controller , amazing bits of kit and take away the big bang when the gas comes in . it must be activated only on full throttle via a switch on the pedal. not a button on the steering wheel (you are not in a film)
you can build a proper nitrous engine like a turbo engine rods, pistons, bearings, bolts, all the expensive things. but for the amount of £ that will cost you can put in a 20vt and with a few basic modifications and get a easy 250 - 300 bhp. in a mk2 that is more than enough , i know from experience having built a lot of them.
use a controller and jet it for about 80 to 100bhp and you will get scared and turn it down.

you posted as i was typing . put a abf head and bottom in with your itb's and it will love gas. very strong engines as they were originally designed as a diesel 16v. built for very high compression

only the medical grade stuff . the gas usually used by racers and on road cars will kill you with out a laugh in it

i was hopeing the just fit a 1.8T 20v wouldn't pop up but it was enevitable really 
. it's a conversion i'm very farmilar with i've had a few and wired enough of them up for mates. there's a one in the garage atm haveing a mildly brathed over AGU dropped in for a mate when i get spare time and parked next to it one with an AMK in it and a rollerbearing garret on it.
it's never been the car i wanted it to be tho it has the power but i just dont like it. the AMK went in as the cheep option to rebuilding the 16VT that was in there before, that engine was roudy as hell subtle as a shovel to the face and as refined as a sledgehammer but it was a lot of fun and faster i really did like that motor. the 16v is more fun in the tight and twisty bits tho and what i plan to do with it i want a punchy motor thats on it, if it'll do 180 bhp without help ad stuff a bit more on with gas to say take it to 250 that'll be about right i've got a gearbox with some pritty short gears to make up for the lack in raw power.
