Thanks everyone, I had a quick look today and I'm still confused.
The spark looks ok (not fantastic) when I rest the plug on the head, wiring up a timing light showed the plug was firing every time I kicked it over.
Sparkplugs are wet when I check after trying it.
Today I can get it to fire / backfire but not run, both exhaust pipes are warmed.
@brightspark today it's firing but not running, plugs when it stops are wet.
@Ali - I think I should have enough here to find the fault but offer is much appreciated! I tried a couple of other plugs and no difference.
@baburao - the HT leads are part of the coils (a twin-coil pack from an older japanese bike), spark is ok but I've seen better. Timing bolt was bottoming out and going tight before it clamped - I found out yesterday & fixed it.
@cocker a lot depends what I can buy locally, new condenser & plugs are on the shoping list if I can find any.
@Arc Tourist - the wiring is just an earth cable, positive feed to the coils, and a wire to the distributor/points, all look ok.
@mtt.tr - today it won't run, yesterday it would tickover but not rev, plugs are sooty but sparking ok. Pilot screw is out about 1 turn.
@MBB - the float jet swas stuck, already free'd off and the mesh filter inside is clear.
@Rannsachair - fuel was fresh yesterday, carb is well sealed with a rubber o-ring.
@Morrisman - yes I tickle the carb, no chcke fitted.
@MBB - the "tickle to keep it running" has worked fine in the past, will try it next time I get a chance.
@Robert. - this is very old design, a carb slide pulled up by the throttle cable, no diphragms.
@Seadog - yes
@wristpin - condenser is one of the suspects, would that run for seconds then die?
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I think I've run out of time for now - will see if I can pick up plugs, condensor, brake cleaner when I'm in town - ready for more next weekend
