anyone know anything about electronic components?

My dehumidifier is not working properly the relay on th pcb is just going click click click and the machine is constantly starting to fire an then stopping.

Looking at the pcb there is a resistor which looks to have blown brown marks on the board underneath.

Trouble is it looks different to the other resistors instead f having coloured bands on the body it just has a spiral

Is there a way of telling what it is? Ive tried to take a pic but its too small...

What shape, colour and size is it? It may be a small inductor.

What ever it is it's almost certainly not a resistor unless it's wirewound and the colour code and the markings have burnt off. Any chance of a pic ?

Electronic components are like links in a chain - when a fault develops its the weakest component that blows.

For example, a resistor blows. If you just replace it it will more than likely blow again. You have to find the faulty component that is causing the resistor to blow.

It is not easy.

Culprits most likely to cause a component to blow are other components going short circuit for example a capacitor or a motor winding.

Also components that have failed and gone out of spec like transistors and the other big bits of solid state Silicon, like Diacs, Triacs, Diodes, SCRs

Its so small the camera struggles.

Its marked as a resistor on the pcb (r4) all the other rs are definately resistors.

Its the same shape as a resistor but it looks like 2 caps with a tube inbetween. Tge tube has a spiral around it. The caps have a brown stripe round them.

Does sound like a wirewound resistor. Can you see a break in the wound spiral? If not it's probably just got very hot and burned off its outer coating (that would have carried its resistance value etc.)... which probably means something else has failed!

Some times there is a circuit layout drawing on the inside of the flap where the bottle is you might be lucky and find the info on there

Yep... though you may get confusing readings from whatever else is in the circuit; it's always better to desolder at least one end to be certain. That sort of resistor would tend to be used for values lower than 100 Ohms.

Look to see if your camera has a macro mode on it (usually a tulip to indicate taking close up pics of flowers!)

Wirewound resistors tend to have the value printed on rather then the standard coloured band code.

small domestic dehumidifyers are only fit for the scrap heap if they break down . Oft as not it is the loss of coolant that casuse probs so the compressor draws too much curent and burns /damages other components in the circuitry .

We are on our third demumidifier in eight years . The first two had suffered corrrosion where the copper pipes run through the ally cooling fins .. constant wet dry.. wet dry cycle does not take long to set up disimilar metal problems and it's these that make holes in the pipes .

That clicking of the relay was an indicator for both of our failed ones as well .

Is the pump hot?
Failures where the thing has kept trying to start was nearly always pump
related[thermal cutout kept cutting out] and probably due to the fact[mine anyway] they freeze and I have to hit them with a blow lamp once a day, the pumps ran non stop while they were frozen. I got through at least one a year then got a nice ebac[looks just as scabby as the others] which defrosts and doesn't freeze[well only a little bit when it's really cold]; the ebac's so good I have had to replace the fan motor in it[I say that is good as the pump didn't die].
