I'm assuming hes been on a kart at some point?
I've just seen lots of dads spend loads of money on all sorts from radio control cars through karts, then cars, just because they like it . . . the kids do it because dad wants to - but don't enjoy it much and would rather be elsewhere . . .
Similar to why I consider trials the best motor sportits a shame there isnt a homemade/diy or ( or any kart ) kart racing circuits as long as it follows a set of rules
for the ones that want to get in to it as its always the same spend loads just for a little bit of fun
I think thats why i love stock cars, demolition derby banger races got a set bunch of rules to follow bring any vehicle
and the lot has been bloody ruined until theres hardly anything left nowadays
note not forgetting track safety and standby ambulance
Competitive kart racing is NOT cheap. I've know a Cadet driver have a budget of, wait for it, £350,000 for the year to compete And that is using a kart with a Honda GX160 engine, the same as on lawn mowers and cement mixers. A couple of weeks ago a kart company was asking £18,000 for one of these SP (selected parts) engines. Parents will invest 1000's in engines by buying up good engines just so that they are not in the equation. Just so little Johnny has more chance of winning and getting noticed, hopefully like Lewis Hamilton. But you CAN beat the "best" without huge wallets and that is very satisfying. Rye House has produced some great drivers, Lewis Hamilton F1, Ash Sutton Touring cars who won in his first year, Martin Hines, superkart world champion who came back after 20 years to win it again........ Just like most sports, when the cash gets flashed, the sport gets ruined for the real enthusiasts. It's resulted in the loss of many great but small clubs and tracks and a sport that had been strangled by the governing body heaping regulations and rules on it, the MSA or MSUK as they've now reinvented themselves as. Or MUK as I call them.
Slightly off topic but I always loved it when an old twin shock rocked up and showed the boys on there 10 grand Monty's how it's doneI never knew they were buying up the engines
your so right about the cheque book gets you further up the grid and it is so satisfying when natural talent beats them

My first race on a bike was at Mallory Park, I thought I was quick on the roads but it's nothing to racing for real!
I think I got lifted up by someone on a 350LC at Gerrards the next time I went and ended headbutting the tyre wall!
All good fun, I did win some races over the years though so not all bad

I've seen the dads throwing money at it trick when I raced RC cars in the 90's.
They'd literally be screaming at their kid if something went wrong! Mental.
