Thanks guys, good to hear that perseverance can pay off. I've tried most things and have heard that oven cleaner is good at getting carbon off, but haven't tried that as yet, as I'd assumed it was rust, not carbon. Definitely worh a try though. 'Monkey', what did you soak yours with and for how long?

Usually carbon builds up from diesel, leaking past a seal.
And forming a varnish like gum..
Tolerances, how they're fitted, and how they're secured.
The OPs problem is the injectors will be corroded in, as you have a lump of steel mounted in aluminium, with pretty tight tolerances in the nozzle nut area, and little sealing to keep water out.
Sometimes you can get lucky and move them using fairly basic tools, but often you'll need a hydraulic puller, which for most garages isn't feasible, and why so many injector removal specialists currently exist.
The one I've used, had 6 figures worth of specialist tooling, and if he couldn't get it out, then it wasn't coming out with the cylinder head still attached to the block.
He used to charge two fees. Lower fee if you hadn't damaged the injector with your own attempts, and a higher fee if you'd already damaged the injector.
VW use fairly mediocre mounting clamp bolts, so over time they stretch enough to let things start moving, however the engines they tend to move on, the injectors go through the rocker cover so don't corrode in due to being surrounded by oil. The engines where they didn't go through the rocker cover, also suffer from corroding in place.
All can suffer from the sealing washer gradually being eaten away, which is where the black death comes from. The injector doesn't move, but the combustion gases blowing past results in a slow build up of tar around the injector, which pretty much glues them in place.

Well, I finally got one of the two stuck ones out - using a further extension and a LOT of effort! I only have the nozzle end of the broken one to remove now. I say 'only'. I applied the same pressure to it as the other one (using a sacrificial top end) and this time my home-made tool broke! So, this is really stuck. I haven't quite given up yet, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to shift it. Mine are not within the cam cover, so only leakage from the sealing washer or rust is likely and there's not much sign of rust on the one I got out, mainly carbon.
