anyone identify this welder

hi guys

was given this welder by a friend, which belonged to his dad, has been in the garage for around 10 years and not used since then, i, m a novice welder and only ever used a mig for 1 hour max, is there any safety issues i should look out for, noticed that it's missing the earth strap, and the other lead has a few cuts but none are throw to the inner core, would it be ok just to plug this in and go for it, would welcome any advice

no bother if the output leads are a bit naff but check the mains lead in . it may probably be perished on the ends if its rubber cable and if so renew it

It looks a little rusty and neglected, but is probably fine.

I'd be tempted to replace the main lead and both the welding leads with new ones. Also clean up the studs that the welding leads connect to. Maybe go for a new electrode holder too.

The transformer is likely to be OK though - but it's worth taking the top off and giving it all a good clean out and inspection.

Oh, and it'll probably want a 32A supply...

cheers guys thanks for advice,i will replace all the leads, noticed dinze plugs seems to be common, would it be easy to convert the welder to use these fitting have took a pic of the insides what do you think? , have got a tin of electrical cleaner would this be ok to use

It should be straight forward to fit dinse panel mounted sockets.
It might require a bit of fettling on the casing but shouldn't be too dificult.

It was pretty straight forward on a clarke arc welder on which i did the same.

any idea what size of dinse plugs i would need

I suppose it depends what size cables you will use.

I used 25mm ones and smallish cable as i wasn't welding too far from the set.

I think the most common size is the 35-50

just curious why do u want to put plugs on the leads instead of just lugs on the end ?

the are pretty rusty, some of the new leads i was looking at come with the dinse ends, is there a good web site for buying spares online my own local shop was wanting £37 for 4m leads plus £5 each for the dinse fittings

Dinze ends are good if you need to change leads around or between machines. If not use crimped ends and clean the terminals up then cover in Vaseline

I bought a couple of 25mm 3M leads from there about a year back and they were £13 each, one with an earth clamp and the other with an electrode holder both with DINSE plugs. Reasonable quality I thought.

Add whatever it is for P&P, probably £6.

I'd be inclined to get lugs and forget rejigging the welder with DINSE sockets, just swap the DINSE plugs for lugs.
