How many modern vehicles (less than 30 years old?) have contact points? They are all electronically triggered - generally by a Hall Effect device - these days or controlled by the ecu.
Might be good to know what vehicle it is? I see it is fitted with a carburettor? That likely dates a 4 cylinder engine.
The following diagram, from a Suzuki Samurai forum, confirms that it is a filter for the ECU and the rev counter:zigzag will most likely be a resistor, it looks like some sort of shaping circuit to extract ignition pulses for the ecu or possibly a rev counter
The capacitor goes to ground so the circuit is trying to remove some of the higher frequency component
