After three years work I finished my restoration project yesterday. I'm never doing that again... until next time
I've got a month off work so today I'm starting my next project, which is a 4x4 trials buggy. If you've followed my previous posts, I was on about building an Ultra4 / Comp Safari buggy, but I've had kids since then so time and money is tight. A trials buggy will be much simpler and easier and cheaper.
Road legal and passing the IVA test is one of the objectives. I read through the IVA test requirements. There's a couple of criteria that could make hydro steering illegal:
I've been warned though, by the owner of a 4x4 building workshop, that the DVSA fail hydro steered vehicles anyway, due to their bad handling. There is a rule in the IVA manual that the vehicle has to generally handle safely, and, well, bad handling is a characteristic of hydro steering.
I've written to DVSA to get some guidance, because without hydro steering I'll have to downgrade from four link suspension to crummy 3 link. DVSA take a few weeks to reply on technical stuff, and then they usually just quote the manual so I expect their reply might not be hugely useful.
Anyone have any experience on this?

- The steering must self centre when the car is moving forwards
- The steering must operate with the engine off
