hi

l am having a little problem with my trees being eaten now unless its the ramblers being very undernourished and feeling the need to chew on bark then l have to assume its deer, so l thought l might try and get some pics of them for no other reason than it sounds an interesting idea/project, l need to build a deer feeder which l can do out of 4" drain pipe this will help keep the deer off my trees and give me some where to mount a camera
so the question is does anyone have an experience with a a trail camera like this

do they work, is the quality any good etc etc



as an aside to this l also suffer with fly tipping in my gate way, really pi$$es me off they can drive out 5 miles into the country but cant manage 2 miles to the local tip, its usally old tyres or garden waste in black bags, never any domestic waste that you can get an address from, the gate posts are 4" box section l would imagine l could get the camera inside the gate post and leave it there so its takes a pic of anyone that pulls up and emails it to me,
l would really like to take some one their rubbish back on my tipper and leave it in their drive way

l would be very suprised if any pikey drives round on number plates that relate to his vehicle, they seem to have them regestered to a po box back in ireland,
they have nothing to fear from tax/speed cameras or anyone noting down there reg numbers, the law dosent work/apply to anyone without a permant address, l best hope its a local gardener who likes to leave me his weeks work in my gate way lol

I'd also look at a Gopro you could use it on the buggy as well then

l have a gopro camera, but the battery life is very short for leaving inside a gate post, would be flat in a couple of hours, the beauty of the one l linked to is that it will email me the pics real time where as l would have to collect the gopro and unload it, the gopro will not work via a motion sensor either l would have to set it on time lapse and leave it taking pics which means l would be very lucky to catch some one in the daylight,

gopro is great on the buggy though it has produced some err interesting shots lol

l will admit to being on my second gopro due to an embarassing accident on my first, l wanted some aerial shots from way above my buggy track, so l bought some helium and some 3' diameter baloons, l set the gopro on time lapse and sent the camera hundreds of feet into the air tethered by 20 lb fishing line, well l was to impatient as it was far to windy really and the baloon got tangled in a tree and the line broke
and away went my gopro camera towards worcester at around 1000 feet up
expensive lesson, use shark line next time so l replaced the camera and bought the wireless add on, but that dosent work so at the moment the camera is on its way back to gopro with a software issue according to them

l was thinking of welding a top on the gate post so unless they have a stilh saw will be tricky to get to, and the camera will have already emailed me the pics by the time they find it

If it's encased in a steel post, it will not be emailing you as the wifi / bluetooth wont work. Can you run a cat5 (100m should be ok) and you can do power over the same cable solves the battery life issues at the same time. Thinking about it if you have lights at the gate you could run network over your mains (with suitable adapters),

there not stupid. ive got them all round my house and infrared beams round the drive the b ,.,..,stards stiil drive in or walk around and they couldnt care less what security u have and even if u catch them at it are u going to risk the hospital food u will need for a few weeks ive battered a couple and been beat up meself for trying to protect property .what happens round ourway an old bloke and a young woman drive round scouting in an escort van when summats spotted they tap on door and ask for any scrap if no ones in there on the phone to a scrote in a transit pickup .they nick the gear and no one sees nothing

does it record a 15 second "clip" every time the motion sensor is triggered ? so you end up with loads of clips on the sd card or is just one 15 second clip you get ?


does it work ok in still mode and are you happy with the results ?

specs seem to suggest it will run for 12 months on 8 AA batteries and store up to 12,000 pics on a single card

I've used a couple of the Bushnell trail cameras - for wildlife they're excellent.
I was sceptical at first but wife bought me one for my birthday, I was so impressed I bought another. I guess that there's not much to choose between different makes but I very quickly decided that for wildlife the video option beats still pictures hands down. Even though the video resolution is less than stills, it's easier to pick out the animal in video. You need to position it in an area where the target animal is known to pass, it's no good planting it randomly in the middle of a field - I tried that!
If you're wanting to use it for human targets at night then you will need one that offers true infra-red illumination, the so-called no-glow versions, as the others emit a dull red light that does not seem to bother animals, but will give away it's presence to humans.

It records 15 second clips whenever triggered i think you can vary the time between one clip and the next time it triggers. The card is a couple of GB.

Takes individual pics if needed.

The image is pretty good , day or night.

I don't think it would go 12 months on batteries.

well l made me a deer feeder cheap a few bits of plastic drain pipe and we are almost ready to test, fill it with pony nuts etc and it should stack up the pipe and drop down as they eat it from the "y" piece ( maybe ), base is an off cut of 4" by 2" box slipped in the drain pipe with a little help from a sledge and then a flange welded on that l can use to bolt an old car wheel to to make it stand upright, coat of army green and the job's a good un,
l have managed to borrow a motion activated camera for now so we can test this out and if the deer are camera shy then l guess l wont be buying a camera lol, down side is that if it gets nicked l will have to buy this one and l wont have it, double wammy, so l decided to make a little metal box l could fit on the front that locks the camera in, well l looked on ebay first as you do. once l had come round l decided it was cheaper to make a metal box than buy one
