Anyone got some wisdom on car transport?

Might look into transporting late grandfather's E-type 4.2L swapped MGb (pre seatbelts/airbags mot and road tax exempt 4.2L manual overdrive gearbox beast!) from TR4 up to Scotland on the back of a truck/trailer but have no idea where to begin and what's a realistic price to expect.

Quick search on the comparison transport websites give almost £1k

Last time I did that sort of job I rented a 3 axle trailer and did it myself. The place I used would rent you a Land Cruiser as well if you didn't have anything to tow it with yourself. Is there a similar rental place round your way?

With fuel etc I still don't think you'd see much change out of £500.

well i did a quick calculation, and just in fuel alone to do that round trip would cost me approx £648.08. (+-1mpg... assuming aberdeen as a easy example) plus the guys time and a bit of profit....

id take the £1k quote and do that.

Looks like fun! Legalities aside, is it in a roadworthy & driving condition?

It's MOT exempt & tax exempt so to drive it legally you just need valid insurance then apply for a "free" ( chargeable - but cost is £nil) tax disk.
Make sure your breakdown cover is valid and have a road trip to collect it.
Obviously if it's not roadworthy ignore the suggestion.

Edit: I just looked and TR4 is in Cornwall - from there to Scotland is not going to be a short (or cheap) trip.

January 2022 I got a Discovery transported from Bristol to West Lothian for £467 by a company on Shiply.
Could have got it cheaper but I wanted to be sure that they had full and proper insurance.

If I drove from Kent to Truro, then to Edinburgh and back home, would cost around £350 in fuel, plus wear and tear, meals, and an overnight stop, another £150 or so. Two days pay, plus being knackered ......

Then factor in trailer hire if you had to, £1000 does not look so bad. Unless you like a road trip. If it runs, I would drive it.

Believe it's needing a bit of work unfortunately otherwise I'd certainly consider it although it needs specialist insurance due to mods and the 4.2L e-type engine swap (insured for around £15-20k) and has absolutely no fancy modern stability control electronics and all the other boring safety features so it's the ultimate drive with just you and the road inches below I'd probably crash the second I hit the gas pedal

It cost me £50 for 5 miles on a flatbed recovery truck a while back..

That was for our Golf moving it from one spot back to home (not taxed or MOT'd for years).

That would make an epic roadtrip if it's mechanically sound!.

Remember, cheapest isn't always best. The car moving job is a race to the bottom and half of the cowboys aren't insured for goods in transit.

Paid £1 a mile probably 15 years ago so expect more like £1.50+ now.
Cost up hiring a big van with towbar and a car transporter trailer then work out how many miles to calculate fuel costs if you fancy doing the job yourself
