Anyone got a Range Rover Classic?

I've had a couple, my 2 door cleaned up quite well when I came to sell it at 20 years old, one chap gave it a good looking over and test drive and said it was perfect, just what he wanted apart from the numberplate showing how old it was, he phoned me a week later to say he had changed his mind, but it was too late, I'd sold it.

It would be my 2nd Land Rover, the 1st was a '72 Series 3 I restored. A bit more complicated but couldn't be much worst rust-wise, right?

Some of the RR bits are getting quite expensive. As @Tinbasherdan said the chassis tend to survive better than defenders but the 1990 chassis we are finishing up on just now ended up with quite a lot of steel cut out and new plates welded in. The body was shot and the interior had already been stripped out before we got it so this one is going to live on as a hybrid.

I've had a number of them. Best was a 1974 two door -V8 manual- back when they were still utility with luxury- you really could hose off the interior, with the heavy pvc seats.
None suffered chassis rust - all suffered with rotten sills, and most of the 4 doors suffered rust on the rear door slam panels (c post?)
I converted one from v8 to Isuzu 2.8td - great but shouldn't have bothered.
v8 on lpg was brilliant- still thirsty, but affordable.
My least preferred was the soft dash - it had really come too far from it's roots, and wasn't luxurious enough to match other cars.
Would I have another- damn right I would- not at north of £8k though.

How much galvanized stuff can you buy for the build? That would be my main concern.

The gear box is the LT95, right? Same as I have in my 101.

When I had the v8 in the 101 I got less than 10mpg. And that was 20 years back.

What the price of a gallon of petrol now?

Whilst it may seem like "it will all be fine", its easy to end up with a vehical that you begrudge driving due to the sheer cost.

(My friend has a petrol series with way better mpg, and cost is still a limiting factor for him in its usage - not that he cant afford it, just that he has a car that's way cheaper to run so just never bothers driving the series)

They're cool and all that, but there are loads of things that I might be able to afford to do, but the opportunity cost of them is still too great.

I was just looking at that. A new galv chassis is £4K However, as an investment that would make it easier to sell on if done right, and I’m under no illusion about the swap.

The LT95 was a whiney thing. I got 23 on a run from a low compression 1980 and 20 from a high comp 82, so the RR final drive must be different to the 101. It's boring when a triangle bush goes and the thing changes lanes when you get to a rutted bit of dual carriageway.
The body comes apart with a screwdriver.
You can sometimes find your self wearing an original head lining when driving.
Most will be on the second set of tailgates
Watch the big steering knuckles for rust.
If you won't drive it why think of owning it??

I’ve told the story here before but a few years ago I was at the local scrap yard hunting for some disco bits and the owner asked me to have a look at a Range Rover. It was a mint, early 2 door v8 manual, even had the optional picnic hamper etc. very low miles. He let me drive it up the road and back and I’ve never driven a tighter Range Rover. It was being crushed as the owner had bought a brand new RR and didn’t want to see the old one back on the road as it held too many memories for him

RR final drive must be different to the 101

There were different ratios in the transfer box. The 101 had quite a low output ratio whereas the RR and Stage 1s had a 0.9 to overdrive it.

101 has 4.7 diffs as well vs RR 3.54

I scrapped a 1992 3.9 V8 a couple of years ago, did briefly consider putting the engine into my series 2A but like many things never got round to it.
Currently have my 1995 300TDi sitting on axle stands and realising I'll never get round to finishing it (good bit of work done on it and new parts) am looking to trying to sell it for spares or repair.

I had a 3.5 classic at one point. It looked great, but the body basically rotted away inside the shiny alloy nicely painted exterior. I started to disassemble it to fix some body undershell rust, and when we came to the chassis it was paper thin on top and at the rear. That at least explained the tailgate popping open under hard acceleration. The central locking computer was mounted the floorpan inside, which leaked of course. So the only time I forded water the lock computer went mad and locked and unlocked all the doors rapidly, bending the rods and damaging the lock mechanism. The interior looks sumptious but it just makes repairing all the rot harder and its difficult to clean and all the RR electronics and gadgets just end up random with old age. I'd bet the difference between the high end price ones and the low is down to how much rot they have in them both chassis and inner body.
I decided a diesel 90 was more basic and suited to my wants/needs, and designed to be washed out with a garden hose with no fancy interior or electronics or gadets, so I got one to replace it that I still have (though I finally had to put a new galv chassis under it after 14 years as they're not immune to rot issues either as we all know). I still have lumps of the classic around. I do like a v8 rumble though & I just bought a 4.6 out of a p38 to go in my 101fc to replace its baked 3.5, and I'm going to convert it to run full time on e85 as thats half the price of real petrol here.

Its only the early 2 door RR with a lt95 though isnt it? My 3.5 had a LT77 from memory.
