boasts 125bhp and 60ish MPG.

my ideas of a toy or a 4x4 have been dashed for the moment, new promotion requires me to drive about to various sites, i get fuel covered by the company but its a fixed price per mile, so need to average at least 42mpg, the higher the fuel economy the more i make off it.

insurance is also an issue, i dont know why but i can insure an old 3L bmw for about 350 quid a year but a new 2.0D anything is touching a grand...

i like fords though so hoping the ecoboost might be a solution to my needs

No but have driven the new astra before they were launched, similar thing I expect tiny turbo engine, went quite well when reving but gutless when off boost!

Not driven one myself but have heard good things about them, I'd take the 60 MPG with a pinch of salt though.. Its very rarely entirely accurate.

that is shocking, although im 25 and any new car is looking to be expensive to insure...even the tiny engined ones, although £60 quid a year for me for the ecoboost isnt too bad compared to your costs.

i expected it would be gutless off the boost, just like driving any other 1.0, i hate small engined cars, anything below a 1.6 has never given me much to think about but these new tiny turbo'd cars have mroe power than my 1.6 so im wondering if they are competent on the motorway trips and when loaded up

Think the astra was 105 ish hp and on a normal run you wouldnt really know it 1.0, I was surprised to find it was only 1.0 but I was trying it to its limits !

Yes driven one many a time, very nippy, great fun but when loaded up with passengers coupled with the hilly roads of Cumbria you can soon tell it's a small engine.

MPG is poor because to get the most out of an engine the size of a food mixer you have to work it hard and the claimed economy is rubbish unless you are on a straight road, one up, never changing gear and doing 40mph..you can then get over 40mpg and touch 50mpg if your right foot is light enough.

I heard a worrying thing for long term ownership, apparently the water pump is inside the block with no external access, that may be a rubbish fact and not one I have checked up on but it is to be hoped if it is they have designed a water pump that lasts longer than the norm.

im starting to find a few people that have had issues with oil pumps, and with the turbos...realistically i am only going to have whatever i buy for 3 years and then trade it in again but im starting to think i may be better off with a bigger diesel, i will usually have a fair amount of kit in, and not light kit either.

think i will do a bit more digging and see what comes up...

Hyundai ix35 1.7 diesel, I get 45mpg local driving and over 50mpg on distance, once touched 60mpg cruising back from Newcastle, great driving position, loads of space, plenty of power and more extras than most premium cars have.

my mate had one he got me to drive it before telling me it was only a 3 cylinder and he got ****e loads of miles out of a tank it was pretty nippy around town

i got good miles out of my alfa with same engine...shame the rest of it was an alfa and fell apart eh

They should be paying you at least 45ppm if its your own car for the first 12000 miles then 25ppm LINK . This includes fuel, insurance,wear & tear etc. 42mpg is roughly 15ppm so you should have 30ppm to pay for the upkeep of the car . Also you will need "for business use" on your insurance, otherwise you are not insured and if you get caught you wll get your vehicle impounded £150 6 points and a fixed penalty £150.
