Anybody live near A487 Corris/Esgairgeiliog Mid Wales......Help possibly required...

My son is with his better half, their car has broken down on the A487 they are Ok atm, but it appears the thermostat has jammed shut and the car engine is overheating. Car is a Ford Fiesta 1400cc.

She is member of the RAC/AA, but has not got the relay/get you home service..... .

I'm 114 miles away (in the Chesterfield area) with little chance of helping.


I was just wondering, if there was anybody just a few miles away who might be able to help, if the breakdown service leaves them stranded????

sure the RAC/AA could remove the stat at roadside sure you get 30 mins labour

The thermostat is buried behind the alternator and that has to be removed to gain access to the thermostat housing. Its not a nice job during the day, let alone at night on the side of the road..

I agree but my son isn't that way inclined with cars...and seeing it is almost impossible hidden under the the inlet manifold, let alone hitting it. Plus its a plastic moulded housing and it probably hasn't been off since new in 2004/6.......

Heating on full blast, one or more windows open if it gets too hot inside, keep an eye on the coolant temperature gauge and slow down if engine gets too hot. Should get them home. I had this once, on an Astra, and it got me home. If they don't know where the coolant temp gauge is, it's a bargraph type in the centre of the instrument display, with thermometer symbol at the left, and C (for cold) on one end and H (for hot) on the other (see pic, not to be confused with the outside temp display at the top). The image shows the bargraph "blobs" with the engine up to normal temp (i.e. half way across).

PS: The coolant temperature display shown in my previous posting is for a Mk7 fiesta. The Mk6 doesn't display coolant temp, by default, but there is a hidden menu, accessed by pressing the odometer reset button for about 10 to 15 secs to go into test mode, then going through the options.

I would imagine if they upgrade their breakdown service to “relay, get you home” the AA or RAC will do just that as I’ve known people who are not members who have broken down and have joined up after the fact and have been looked after.
