anybody know anything about waste oil heaters?

not sure where to post this, I have a thermobile AT-303 which keeps clogging the supply pipe with soot after about a days burning. I take it out and have to drill the soot out to get it to work again(but not as hot as I think it should be),it's the pipe thats directly above the burner dish.

Hi phase,

Well a friend of mine has one in his workshop and is forever cleaning it out, from what he says, it's just high maintenance all the way.....Perhaps it's dripping too much oil???

Also check the flue is clear, just a suggestion.

hi,

yeah it says to clean the dish out everyday-which I have been doing. Someone that used to sell them said the ashes left over should be white-but it's thick black solid soot. will check the flue.

Ayup, By the sounds of it your burning some bad oil which is sooting the feed pipe up, you need to be really careful with this especially anti freeze in the oil as this is highly corrosive as well as the hard soot buildup it causes.

I remember seeing the plans for a 'drip-fed' waste oil burner in Mother Earth News back in the early 70`s.....it used our 'old friend' the propane-gas bottle and several cast-iron pipe threaded fittings for the burner assembly.

Being an (old) Hippy-child: I have a copy of the "Mother Earth Book of Homemade power" (paperback) which has a reprint of the same waste-oil burner design article, but I think posting a copy of that article here might be against (both) copyright and forum rules.

there's really not much to them and they seem to go for a lot on ebay even old ones like mine,i can send photos and measurements if thats any help. As already mentioned there are designs floating around the internet.

I had different oil in it yesterday and it was running fine untill i finished which was around 10:30-will see if it's ok today.

Hi everybody i am new to the club but would like info on the burner not drip feed, more like the Babington burner type, thinking of makeing one for my workshop useing propane bottles with a water jacket feeding a radiator.

The only thing with these waste oil burners (like first mentioned) is the fact that you must have a licence to burn old engine oil
