Cheers for the suggestions for the access plate chaps. I'll get one added.
The flue pipe extends about 12" or so above the register plate, if I recall. I think the regs suggest approx. 18", but that would have placed the top of it too close to the bricks in the stack, (the stack cants off to the side), so I went shorter to leave a few inch clearance between the top of the pipe and the brickwork above it.
