Are there any webmasters among you?

Years ago i used to know my way round domains and hosting but I've forgotten how to do most of it. My website is hosted with OVH and i forgot to renew the domain. Have since renewed, but now the site will not load. I've reset the DNS and made sure everything is pointing to the right place with no luck.

Right, might be a cache issue with my pc or dns resolving

That’s why how long is important Brad. DNS is nothing more than a distributed map and basic caching. The caching is what gets a lot of folk as it can be anything from immediate to 48hrs to percolate to your DNS resolver.

Try flushing the DNS cache or use another connection such as 4G on a phone. You can also temporarily swap to opendns or similar to try.

I can also access the website from my phone when connected to 4G but not when connected to our wifi

Different answers on different vectors always points to caching for me.

What’s the URL in a clickable format and I’ll try it on my systems if you want. I’m on a (usually) very rapid DNS update here.

Assuming a Windows machine on the one that didn’t play ball for you, issue:

ipconfig /flushdns

In a shell and that may resolve it. If your ultimate DNS provider is not up to date it won’t though as that command just says to empty the local cache and get the fresh record from the provider.

Define “pretty poor”

Is it working? As in type a URL in a browser and you can see something that’s expected?

Do you need the design/layout tidying up?

Is your content decent or do you need help with that as well?

Okay, so that loads fine for me. Looks a bit poor with the layout on the phone (which I’m on right now) but nothing that would stop me using the site.

A different way of asking you would be to say, “What do you want your website to do/do for you?” For example, are you looking to provide information and contact details to potential customers when they search for things on google et al? Or are you wanting something with a bit of back-end integration so that you can automate things to make you money? Or do you want something very bespoke that does something very special?

Basically I’m trying to eke out your requirements and then can advise you on your options

How many products are we talking about? A dozen, a hunner, more? How often would you want to change them in terms of their description/image? Do you want to sell them from your site and if so do you mind using a PayPal button or do you want ‘proper’ ecommerce?

I appreciate a lot of folk would do this privately and you’re welcome to do so but since you asked in public and I thought it might be useful to someone to see how the process goes (or improve mine, I’m cool with that) for software-y design choices.

I don’t want PayPal off site as they’re a pita. Also my market is mainly Nordic country’s and the USA , actually everywhere but the U.K.!

So what I'm trying to ascertain is:

• Frequency of content change.
• Are the products data-driven or just static pages? These days not so much a distinction with the plethora of content management stuff out there.
  
• Is true ecommerce integration warranted/wanted? It's a massive step up in terms of work required to include this.
  
• Do you need a strong product management side to the site?
• A bunch of other boring things.

I'd always steer towards something that is widely used, regularly updated and respected. Free (in the source sense) is always a positive sign when the community is large enough as security issues are spotted. Something like WordPress (which @stuvy has mentioned earlier) is a good starter for ten.

I assume you mean the logistics of posting things when you say "post options"?

I'm thinking you should have something like "postage £POA" and link it to a guide on what your 'normal' charges for places are to give people a guide.

How do you normally take payment for the things you sell? Or have you not crossed that road yet?
