Any tyre fitters around?

Day to day repair quite a few (non road use type) tyres. To date, just been putting tubes in, but have been looking for cheaper alternatives for the customers. I've had a good nose around on google etc, and there seems to be quite a few repair options, so a question to those in the trade, what would you suggest as the best (read easiest) option, patches, pin types or are there any other better / simpler solutions?

Also any good / reliable brands to use, based on experience, google brings up everything and it's dog, would be good to avoid pot luck...

Any thoughts? as usual thanks in advance.

Anything from Rema Tip Top, all their stuff is quality. Ideally mushroom plugs for the best repair, buff the inside, vulcanize it properly, etc.

pull through plugs are the better type through the tyres tread ive seen it done on the edges between tread and wall and i dont agree with that type

never patch on the sides blowouts arnt worth it with tyres

the gel type repair looks ok to use and some swear by its use being good buut cabt say thats puncture repair gel

aye, wouldn't use them on a sidewall, like I said these are non road use, slow running types, but regardless they still have pressure in them so don't want to risk anything, so that's why I consulted the oracle of all things, migwelding.co.uk.....

Non road slow speed you can’t really go wrong with these. Sticky worms.

I always have them on the truck and they’ve got me out of a fix on the road as well but they aren’t for road use. If you’ve a slot type damage you can even keep cramming them in till it seals. Even in the sidewalls.

All you really need is a die grinder with a buffing wheel/flap wheel/"golf ball" for roughing up the surface and removing any moulding ribs, then you apply vulcanizing solution on the buffed area around the hole then use a "stitcher" which is just a knurled wheel on a handle to press the patch down into the vulcanized surface.

I prefer flap wheels for buffing the surface. Buffing wheels and "golf balls" tend to skip quite viciously.

Hi James, aye seen those fairly regularly, pulled quite a few out of tyres in for repair for the tubes, didn't seem to be reliable? They don't really give me a lot of confidence to be honest. Sure they're perfect for getting you home and out of a fix but as a permanent repair? not so sure... maybe it's they way they were done, the ones I've seen all came away far too easily..

I’m not sure if they be put in ‘wrong’ so not sure what has gone on there. I’ve used them on plant and things and still there. Even crammed one in the bike tyre just to get home. I’m not sure they are meant as a ‘repair’ but I’ve used them as such and they seemed alright.

Be interested to know why the ones you’ve seen don’t work. Brand, fitter, dunno. You’ve got me wondering now…..

aye; one in just yesterday for a rear tyre on a lawn tractor, one bit flapping about inside and the wee remaining bit on tyre, just came away with little effort didn't seem stuck at all, (didn't want to leave it on in case it rubbed on the new tube), took no effort at all... done by the owner certainly, maybe didn't have the right glue, was too old, or dired up, didn't use enough, didn't leave it long enough... could be one of a myriad of reasons, who know, in any case it didn't seal, that's why he brought it to me...

If done right they work really well. But generally only work up to a certain size or shape of puncture. While you can keep ramming more into a hole to seal it, you're using more individual plugs instead of a single larger plug.

I have a few different kits for punctures that i bought when at the AA. Those string types (always called them push-pulls) as well as "butterflies" and "bow ties".

A lot depends on how you prep/ream the puncture, whether you use vulcanizing solution and sealant, etc. Butterflies and bowties work very well on cuts and tears where other plugs don't seal the ends well.

Overall i find butterflies the best all-round. Strings/Push-pulls are by far the easiest. The bowties i used frequently to repair sidewall dsmage to get cars a short distance to a tyre shop, it's amazing what damage they'll plug, they're meant for plant machinery.

Hole too big, he probably reamed it out too much. You can get thick and thin string repairs. Thin are usually black and thick are brown.

aye I think your right, the key word is if they're done right.. it was brown, certainly bigger that the hole which was pretty tiny, but didn't seem to be stuck at all, maybe not enough solution or not reamed out enough to get to fresh rubber....

will have to get some of these butterfly types to try too, never heard of them, have a few old tyres kicking about, so have a few guinea pigs to try them on first before I let myself loose on customers tyres.

i use em if its just a nail or a screw gone in straight 100mph no bother and on the stockcar ragging it round the track on rough tarmac. thats all they use on the Continent . you go round for weeks with nails and screws in without bother so there hardly likely to fail

Those Rema tiptop butterfly plugs are standard BMW issue in my bike's toolkit. I like the sticky lumpy string ones though and have no qualms about using them long term. If I ever take the tyre off I'll pull them out and fit a proper pull-through plug. I got 3mm and 6mm ones of those.

useless on the road in cars mate had some in and it made the car shudder at high speed unbalanced the tire and the garage wont fix a puncture if u have used it .not disputing your use of it on your application but no good on the road in cars

No for machines only, its good insurance on anything thats prone to punctures. Its a no brainer on any of the smaller tractors and mowing equipment, punctures are expensive especially if the kit is a long way from the yard and the halfwit operating it hasn't remembered to take a repair kit or tools with him.
