Any tips for teaching Mig and stick

Hi chaps/ chapesses,

Just wondered if any of you guys were tutors in the art of welding, I've just started teaching metalwork etc as further education at a drama school- so basic engineering/ welding.

anyways so far so good managed to get the guys and girls to do some nice mig ( on 40x40x1.5 erw) and stick welding (40x40x3 rhs) in 2 days worth. however all find it hard to 'see' whats going on to, if there are any teachers with notes/ pictures they are willing to share that would be awesome, I'm in the process of typing up and trying to get me own notes together but some advice on how to explain what to 'look' for would be ace.

- oh and has anyone tried the cheater lenses b4? would these be of help?

Theres one tutor here, not sure if theres more, theres also a guy who builds sets i think.

The problem i used to have, was not being able to get close enough to see, the cheapy masks, perhaps a little dark to be able to see form more than about 600mm away.
When watching in pairs, it became a lot easier, than small groups.

luckily my groups are only ever about 5 so can rotate nicely- 3 doing mig, one stick, 1 doing tap/die, hacksaw, filing etc worked fairly well the 1st 2 rotations i've done but they always get like an 'arc' (excuse the pun-!) of welding confidence, to being with they are obviously nervous so go slowly concentrating, than they get complacent, start rushing and it all goes wrong, then slowly i have to get them to slow up and take their time and by the end of the 2 days they are getting pretty good... but it's frustrating for them as they can get so dejected in the mid slump-!

Evening George, have your establishment purchase video/CD's of the processes you will be teaching. I always get bums on seats and explain what you will view on screen, is very similar to what you will view within the workshop, except more comfortable and, easier for everyone to clearly see how welding should be done. You have more control this way, you can pause, rewind ect if questions are asked.

Once viewing is complete back to workshop, I will do the same demonstrations to whole or part of group, I find this method makes them more aware of what will happen during demo's, this is taken further by giving 1-2-1 are course progresses.

There are various vids/cd's available, your colleagues will be able to advise suppliers.

cheater lens- is a magnification lens you can put in your face shield to magnify what your looking at-

ahh good call- no they havn't yet- but could download some youtube clips and get them to do some 'pre session' viewing...humm or laptop in the workshop....

I'm in welding at my high school and ill tell you how are program works
first two weeks we go over safety then we go out to the shop and first day the teacher shows us how to properly use the oxy-acetylene torch and bleed them then how to use the arc welder then when you get all the oxy-acetylene torch welds we can tig weld and then after you get your arc welds done you can use the tig welder that program works very well
