so cost is £50.40 p on average for say till end of march 2011 approx £167 .

Being a gas installer for 38 years I still like my 15 year old Baxi wall hung boiler with it's light weight cast iron heat exchanger, although it is nowhere near as economical or environmentally friendly as a condensing boiler especially in this weather because it is still working.

This weather has caught every one out and now the boiler manufacturers are moving the goal posts re installing condensate pipes due to loads freezing even though they were fitted to the manufacturers instructions (which overrides every thing else regarding gas safety regs and building standards.

i fitted my baxi back boiler 27 years ago its been serviced 4 times burns a nice blue flame and no corosion visible anywhere it was filled with fernox rust inhibitor and the waters as clean as the day it was put in

ours stopped working yesterday. condensate pipe (22mm plastic not lagged) NOT frozen but the downpipe that it runs into was froze solid from drain all the way to the guttering. downpipe looks like its made of asbestos or something similar.

you fit it with a frost stat so it only comes on when external temp =2c

That was just a bit of fun with the tank heater on all the time .. I expect the bad weather to run to end of march 2010 with not many days above freezing point.

I was thinking that ..where do you fit the frost stat outside in a partially vented waterproof enclosure box ? inside and run a probe outside ( four metres for me )

On looking at the link site the gear they have looks much more suitable and at 10 watts inside foam insulation tube it won't over heat at all .

Will play further on this one as the ice has barely melted despite me playing .

It looks like we have been exceedingly lucky , the hot water on the stones and pipe + the insulating coverings has allowed the ice to come out the pipe and let condensate drip away down the drain .

Will be investing in one of these trace heat kits after Crimbo day though .
