Any one make rings?

You often see hacksaws etc labelled 'stainless only' in fabs shops.
I got left some tools by a jeweller, and there were two hacksaws, labelled 'silver' and 'gold'.. how cool is that!

Hi, The contacts in switches used to be Silver, I'm not sure they still are but maybe an alloy of it.

Try a junk shop for silver cutlery. Or what is known these days as an antique dealer.

They cost more than buying plain silver because of the jewlery, makers like Gordons granddaughter are making. It's also a nightmare making sure they're really silver, lots of cutlery looks to be hallmarked even plated so unless you know what you're buying. I watched a documentary a few years back based in Hatton Garden, the featured a company that came along and performed deep cleaning of the jeweller's workshops every nook and cranny was vacuumed up. The bags were then sealed up weighed, they went off somewhere to be incinerated and the fine metals to be recovered.
It was amazing how much metal was cast basically from the contents of a henry hover bag.

When I was in Perth WA you can visit the perth royal mint[it's now a museum] they still make a few coins there & you can watch the machines stamping them they have a small crucible furnmace [similar to my own] & a A 10 ish crucible & they melt gold down & pour it into a cast iron ingot mould while everyone watched,I got talking to the chap & we got on well as we had similar interests [IE Casting]& he told me when they stopped production they got a company in & cleaned all the roof girders & the whole place spotless & reclaimed thousands of pounds worth of gold dust, in the foyer entrance there's a large solid gold australian dollar, it weighs one ton!!he told me they cast it because no-one had ever cast a 1 ton gold casting before, I said aren't you worried it doesn't get pinched,he said the weight of it will be a deterrent but there's a mechanism that lowers it underground to a secure safe every night.

Before lock down he came to see the folks at mine. He always has a bag of goodies with him.

Was looking at a very simple ring studded with diamonds. It was part of scrap deal from a trader to revolver stones and metal.

I tried it on and it fit perfectly which is incredibly rare cause I’ve got sausage fingers

I said it was nice, so on the way home he gave it to me free gratis

had to woodworm proof my house and its about 15 quid a gallon a job I was at was getting it done and I tapped up the bloke for some he said a quid a gallon. how much u got mate 20 gallons il take THE LOT20 quid . there was enough to do my house and me brothers and his sons house

PM me if she fancies a go at PMC, I can get you some samples. Pretty sure I’ve got some bronze at least. You model whatever you want and then fire it in a mini kiln or using a blow torch for small parts. The silver can be hallmarked, it’s the real deal - some Mitsubishi invention apparently.

Long time ago when one of my sons was at Brunel university he used to cast rings etc to make a few quid, I went to a wholesale precious metals and stones dealers, with him, There were hundreds of different gold/silver sections, to be bought by the length,Square bars, round bars, angle, hollow square and hollow round tubing, all in various sizes., Just like a model maker dealers shop, but all gold , silver and precious gem stones too.

I had an inkling to do some silver casting a couple of years ago.
Theres a pawnbrokers in leeds (hymans) who will sell scrap sterling (broken jewellery).
They quoted me £20 an oz.
Pure silver 1oz dollars are about the same price.

The local "we buy gold" bloke at the car bootie will NOT sell any - he needs a certain weight to get the best price when he weighs it in. Until he gets that weight, he doesn't get his money back, so its not worth his while to sell in dribs+drabs.

I've never casted but I've made silver rings in the past from D wire and sheet. I used to go to Johnson and Mathey in Brum with my dad. It was funny watching the trades come in and pop a roll of gold wire that was worth a couple of grand (in those days) and just stroll back to the workshop.

I've still got the tools.in the garage along with some silver. I should give it another go.

I know a guy that makes rings and bits from old nickel silver cutlery and when he is happy he silver or gold plates it, I think it is to save having to get it hallmarked.

If I remember correctly you don't have to get gold/silver jewelry hallmarked as long as you don't sell the item as gold/silver. You can still sell it as gold/silver as long as the item is under a certain weight. I can't remember the numbers but I'm sure the Internet knows.
