Where in essex ?? If not far from me I can collect then get it collected from mine as never have any probs sending parcels or having others arranging collections and tbh we are on first term names with most the couriers due to the wife's online addiction lol

Must say I've never had a problem with UPS. My Hermes are OK but if they damage anything it never seems to be covered by the 'insurance'. Alos used IPost parcels to the States and Europe...no problems. Parcelforce are reliable but too expensive.
Check out parcel force via parcel to go.....it seems to be a lot cheaper than on parcel force Web site..
living out in the boonies, we get a lot delivered. I use Parcel2go, they propose the range of the main couriers, over the years probably had them all at one time or another. The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to matter who's ticket is on the box, the end delivery van seems to be the same each time, like it's a centralized depot or something.... We've been pretty lucky so far, I guess most of it depends on the drivers you get, some are very conscientious, others just a waste of time. Had a few issues lately that have all been down to the senders, not packaging correctly, stuff missing out of the box, others bent and damaged. Then you look at the box, and bits of news paper and bits of sticky tape thinking that'll hold 20kg of material... when I send stuff I always base it on the drivers never have the time to lay stuff down gently or correctly and you know fine well it's going to get drop kicked from pick up to delivery, so I package accordingly.
can't really criticize the couriers all the time, but they do bring a lot of the abuse on themselves, but again to be fair, we as senders have to do our part.. the one thing I always take out the insurance now, couple of quid more is definitely worth it.

Slightly off-topic, my brother told me that just before Christmas he ordered a case of wine from Tesco. There was no-one in when delivered so the driver dropped the box over the side gate

You can guess the outcome!I used UPS once to collect and deliver a small motorcycle engine, weight within their limits. The fat guy came, looked at it and said 'that looks heavy, don't think I can manage it mate'. Due to the terrain sack barrow/trolley wasn't suitable, I just picked it up and carried it some 20 meters to the van, weighed less than 25kg. Wondered what he was doing in the job.

ref insurance, I agree with what you're saying and I fully agree it's crap, but until an alternative comes along, what options are there? you know they're going to drop kick it all over the place, and that's there's a high probability that it will be damaged / get lost. You're right it's unacceptable, yet that's the reality.
They need to be held responsible for their actions/ inabilities to deliver correctly, and a review of that is definitely long over due, but what choice do you have at present, they have the market.
Say you send 200 quid's worth of tools, and half of it goes missing - without the insurance you'll at best get the cost of the delivery service back say 18 quid... With Parcel2go, the insurance is about 4 quid on top of that, way I see it is at least I'll get my costs covered. Yes it's crap, but as I said what other options are there. Even if you said they were to cover the costs regardless of "separate insurance" or not in their price, all they would do is lump their costs back on to you anyway, price goes up, so you'll be paying whichever way it goes.
at the end of the day it's a choice. Not saying I agree with it, but until I find an acceptable alternative I'll take the insurance.

It's always been the case insurance was included but as cheaper couriers cropped up they started adding it as separate costs to allow for low value parcels and then it became common place to add optional insurance.

If you can get £200 insurance cover from P2G I'd like to know how. You'll find it's £10 +VAT - £12.
Sadly it is a case of you get what you pay for.
