Push Fit Fittings On Fuel Pipes - Squeeze Tabs Either Side And Pull Off - Clean Around First.

Will do Mick. it's going to have to wait though, one of the other problems I have is the blasted gas people are digging up my drive and the street to replace all the pipes, so the Escort is parked a few doors down at the moment

Finally got around to jacking the damned thing up and grovelling underneath to look for the fuel filter today.
Incidentally it's been in constant use since last I posted and it still hasn't done the refuses to start bit again!
Anyway, turned out the fuel filter is under the car at the back sort of just behind the drivers side rear wheel.
Right where the pipe from the fuel filler connects to the tank. That's changed now, so if it was that we shouldn't see the problem again.
I have got the wife well trained now so she always listens for the pump before she starts it, so if it doesn't start she can tell me whether she heard the pump run or not.
I have a feeling this won't be a problem for much longer as I was amazed at the state of the underneath when I did the fuel pump. The body looks like new and the underneath is as rusty as hell, there is a couple of rusty holes in the rear part of the chassis, under the boot area, not any structural part for the suspension or anything, but he might fail it on the MOT next time because of it, and I still have my Carina on the rollers at the moment so can't do anything about it right now.
