its a good few years since I worked on one of those and that was the fuse box, failing to supply the pump and also lighting fault, the owner got sick of it sold it for 50 quid taxed and mot'd then I got the job of repair half an hour and good as new

me and my mate we once called to pick up a citroen that wouldn't go husband and wife arguing over it so stuck it on the spec lift and drove off, got back to garage had a quick look at it, put some petrol in and started it up there are some fools around

Just to add my 10 pence worth, my sons partners car had an intermittent fault, would not start sometimes. She had the breakdown service out several times, they could not find the fault, all of a sudden it would go, or leave it & try later, then it would start. it turned out it was the in-tank fuel pump. It sometimes did not want to start under pressure. take the fuel line off to check the pump was ok & it ran every time. This fooled the recovery man as he checked the pump was ok, this dropped the pressure, the car would then start & run perfectly.

Thanks Cobbler, ok if I can catch it not starting and I don't hear the pump running, I will disconnect it to relieve the pressure and then see if it runs.
As I suspected it's absolutely hammering down outside today, so it's going to have to wait, can't get it in the workshop as I have one in there in bits.

Hi Wristpin, thought of that one mate, I checked each time it happened and it can happen at any level.
Still raining out there, but I went out and sat in it, turned the key to the first position and listened, I could hear nothing at all. turned the key further and it started immediately. So either the fuel line was holding pressure and the pump didn't need to run, or it's very well insulated. I will take the back seat out to see if that makes it audible.

They normally prime regardless, fuel rail pressure is not sensed on MOST petrol cars. It will prime, then stop, and won't restart until you crank.

Knowing my luck I will be busy that dayHas this car also got an immobiliser run off ECU with a ignition transponder? (not sure how modern they made the escorts in 1997) Check the other stuff first mentioned. But further down the track it may need checking if everything else checks out OK.

There doesn't have to be a remote fob for immo. But as said above, you need to do more testing yet before you get into that.
