any ideas on a repair for this please

right i have the wheel tracking device in the pics , ive broken one of the black plastic legs and cannot contact the seller to obtain a new one

its important that these legs are a snug fit on the 19mm ish tube , and i would need to replace both so that they match exaclty

all i can think off is see if i can find a rose joint end to fit well and use the joint and a length of all tread

any ideas ?

second thoughts rose joints are rounded on the edges , whatever i use needs to be square as it needs to rest on the wheel lip and be repeatable every time

Right you have shown the product now show us the broken part as to where its actually broke?

Im sure Araldite and a pinning of the part might do the job?

its busted at the C shaped end , its gone all brittle and hasnt repaired well , due to the way it leans on the wheel lip they both need to be identical and my repaired one isnt good enough

Could you not use the good one as a template and cut two out in 1/4" plywood? bearing in mind if you do this don't cut them going with the grain of the wood.

im sure someone could cut them ply - i dont think my handycraft skills are accurate enough

In all honestly the design material would have failed if i was the inspector of that device.

I would have had it made out of aluminium,like most contraptions these days the manufacture want their products to break so that more money is involved wanting spares or parts being sold for their product.

Only way I can see a good repair is two large washers glued to the sides of each leg,this means you feed the bar through rather than dropping the bar into the U shape.

You could make 2 identical supports out of any material whatsoever as long as they measure the same and the rod rests in them in the same orientation. Can you contact the inventor Terry Grogan on facebook and ask him if he has any spare bits for sale ?

ive emailed him from several accounts , messaged on facebook and left comments on the youtube vids - nothing in over a week

was hoping to get the part that slides on the tube ready made as i cant really machine /work anything too accurate with what tools i own

right this would do it ...what you think order a 19mm or a 20mm to fit over 19mm tube , dunno if the 19mm would be slack enough with the grub screw undone

then tack some bar onto it

The legs are plastic 'cos as designed they simply clip on and off the tube and need a hint of deformation to do so.

However, in answer to the original question, the bits resting on the wheel rim don't have to be the same as the legs. So use a couple of collars slid down the tube (something like http://www.wdsltd.co.uk/product/3073/set-shaft-collars-wds-650) - use grub screws to hold them or even tape, and support the tube using legs of any old shape and size - you will still be able to set it level with the bubble on the mirror.

Epoxy putty (the stuff you knead together) is a great repair product. Keep a supply in you tool box! All brands (even the pound shop ones) seem to work.

Either repair or mould a new end and stick it on the old rod or make up a new rod. Can file it down to correct dimensions.

You could line the inside of the u with a bit of rubber if need be.

Can you put a pic of the broken bits up.

ajum ..its ruined really and as bricol says it needs some flex so that doesnt help repair options , i think it got brake fluid on it and went brittle

im gona see how a split collar fits the tube then tack a bar to that and see how i get on , will make a matching pair

That looks exactly the same as the one sold by Gunson, might be worth looking if they do spares. I think they are sold under several different labels, my sons got one, I'll see if he can remember where he got it from.

There seems be lots on ebay. Might be worth contacting one of the sellers.

Do they work? Alignment is getting pricey nowadays.
