....I've had to hunt around for a suitable rock as a hammer substitute plenty of times - last time was to release the taper on the 'old style' handlebar stem to pack the bikes for flying back from India a few weeks ago.
I agree with what you are saying regards the pedals but I think there is a better chance of releasing them with an adjustable spanner than with the allen key on the bike multi-tool? A couple of long tours I have done have been flying to places (e.g. Gibraltar and Rome) and then cycling home so I have just needed to nip the pedals on after the flight - no need to undo them until home.
Yeah you won't get much leverage with one of those multi-tools for sure. I took some time mid pedals off my road bike last summer, my god they were seized on. The hex key socket was big enough not to cam out though when I got the big tools on it
