I would not want to spin that very fast, looks like a #30 or #40 taper.
Also the boring bar is on an extension, looks like it can go out to 6" or so.
That's allot of un-balanced weight swing 'round.

Indeed so.
He is a brilliant engineer so I am sure it will be used properly. Maybe it has been modified in the past. As you say looks very unbalanced.

On a Wohlhaupter, the equivalent pieces set the feed rate at which it faces (e.g 0.002" per revolution). So they are similar to gear selectors.

The Wohlhaupter manuals are all online - you would need to look at UPA 5, 6 and 7 to see similar functionality to the one above.

100% it is not, for exactly the reason you state.

The 'other side photo' is a good call as it would show the trip dog arrangement.

Old Emil would be boring a hole in his coffin and facing downwards if he thought his name had been attached to that.

Wohlhaupter seems to have been the one that everyone else copied - Narex, Kuroda, Vertex, the Chinese one ArcEuro sells all look the same and work in the same manner.
