Use petrol. It will make them slippery but will evaporate and and form a good bond. Anything that stays slippery is not a good idea. Likewise fitting tire's on m/c's I always use petrol NOT soap etc.I’m in the process of giving my startrite mercury a bit of a freshen up and have bought some new rubber bump stops for the hinged belt cover to sit on. They look to be exactly the same dimensions as the old ones as far as I can tell. I’m struggling to get them to fit in the holes in the sheet metal. The steel sheet sits in the small groove with the tapered end on the outside. Getting the shallow cylindrical end through the hole is giving me grief. I’ve tried boiling them for 10mins to soften the rubber and that helped a bit but still not successful. Any ideas? Anyone else done this successfully?
