Julian, i stood in more draughty stables holding horses heads while they were shod, standing there bored stiff, wishing i could be in the warm hayshed or at home ! In fact i was supposed to serve my time as a farrier, but the father got his Wolfie Smith "power to the people comrade" mood on and forbad it !

I actually spent about nine months working for a farrier when I was about seventeen. He was quite young but very old school. We made all our own shoes and he ran a forge as well as travelling (with a portable coal forge), so people brought horses to us as well as us going to them. He was a very good farrier indeed but no good at business and in the end he gave up travelling on his accountants advice so I got three months notice, otherwise I might still be doing it. He offered to find me another apprenticeship but said I'd struggle because I knew enough not to ever be happy with a bad job and there was no money in good ones. Happy times though. Towards the end he'd just leave a list of the shoes he wanted on the anvil. I'd turn them up then the next morning they'd be gone and there would be a new list. One day a week there would be horses coming in ( that was a treat, not having to load and unload the forge and anvil several times a day) then every Friday we went to a stables just outside Exeter that kept showjumpers. We'd do all theirs and any others that were stabled there. Between us we would do twelve sets. That was a looong day and there was always a stop at the pub on the way home!

I'm sure if you can find a farrier he will sell you a handful of nails and a few shoes!

Yeah they probably would, but outlets under the Farriers Registration Act and relevant legislation must not sell to the general public as shoeing a horse and not being a registered, qualified farrier is actually illegal. Nails, machine made shoes and tools not being sold to joe bloggs reduces the chances of some poor owners horse having to be shot because a guy who thought he would make a few quid, because its not that hard, banging on shoes.
