Reading through this thread... well it just reaffirms that I intensely dislike the over-complication and ott electronics and controls on newer cars. A lot.
I had a new Renault Kangoo work van for quite a while - it had auto start/stop, as well as an auto brake feature for assisted Hill start. I loathed both features.
The brake drag if anything bugged me more. After lifetime habit when reverse parking/turning when facing uphill, of just leaving the vehicle in 1st with the clutch in to drop into spaces (also then able to quickly "shunt" forward and then drop back using gravity.... this poxy van would just "hang" there, forcing a load if extra gearstick faffing just to do the job slower and more awkwardly.
To defeat the autostart I used to keep the clutch depressed even if I'd selected Neutral and my foot on the brake pedal... to stop the irritating system cutting the motor if you were stationary for 0.5s.
As for electric Handbrake with the calipers coded to the ECU etc - just don't get me started. No way.
I'll steer clear of buying any vehicle with this crap on it for along as possible - the annoyance factor as well as the reliability/cost issues turn me off a vehicle so equipped totally.

Preaching to the choir mate. I wish I'd kept my MK3 Capri Laser, or even my MK1 MX5. Neither car had much on them to go wrong, little to dull the experience of driving, and (to an extent) both could be kept in perfect running order with a toolkit only slightly more extensive than you'd find on a Swiss army knife.

If you can turn it off at the push of a button what difference does it make if a board pushes the button for you?

Disabling it in software is seen as in the same category as removing any other emissions related part of the car (Like pulling off catalytic converters/DPF, or the EGR valve) . Without it my Golf would be pretty much the same as a bog standard TDI rather than a low emissions Bluemotion version that's entitled to cheep tax. That's part of why I want to add something to automate turning it off without physically modifying the original system.
