Hello Folks
The lady indoors has been looking a water feature for some time in the garden. I'll need to run a cable from the mains board to the gargage. Roughly about 40 feet. It'll be run along the wall of the house and into the garage.
what kind of cable will i use, cant really afford armour .
Its strictly for the water feature and the garage light.
will i need a small consumer unit in the garage
Any help appreciated as my knowledge on electrics is small.

My opinion any cable outdoors must be armoured.

outside work is covered by part P and must be certified by a registered electrician or building control...... so easy way is get an electrician to do it

How about a low voltage feed? 12V pond pump and 12V garage light. Even then, I would want to have the cable in some conduit.

i would go for armoured cable too, just for the fact that mice like chewing things

I know the option of armoured cable makes a lot of sense. made redundant a while back and not working at all. will put all on hold for now. thanks to one and all for input

nope it came because people would not do jobs correctly... external work requires BY LAW:-

RCD protection
mechanical protection... this can be SWA
Certified instalation & testing to BS7670.... etc
LBC being informed that the work is being done (either directly or via certs that are required to follow the work)

this is exactly the kind of work that the current regulations were brought in to try to prevent..... half assed efforts "that will do"

I don't remember seeing any reports about fires caused by unsafe installations or cases of electrocution that brought on what seems to be a rather closed shop situation? The other thing is the proliferation of very short duration courses that allow people to qualify to certify installations must be a joke, what can you learn about a subject in such a short time?

is the garage joined to the main building?

for the water feature,if you come across ducting in a scrappy's,something like 2",then run that underground with electrical warning tape over it,and if possible use a stronger cable like NYMJ which is tougher to break down than pvc/pvc.

Theres a 3 ft gap between garage and house and the cable run fron the main board would be approx 40 ft

where are you going to control the water feature from?and what control will you use,switch,timer,remote control?

The underground run will be about 10 ft from garage, it'll be operated by a switch and controlled from the garage.

you only need the 15 feet or so of swa so.i think i payed €2 per metre last time.

whether your house is bungalow,dormer,2 story or town house will determine what is the cheapest way to feed the garage
