any body know why my 1996 1.8 td ford escort has just started to give off execive black smoke on axeleration any coments guys thanks ian

Black smoke is usually overfueling / unburnt fuel try some diesel injector cleaner for starters ( halfords )

Black smoke is overfuelling, so it's either too much fuel or not enough air.
I'd change air filter and check turbo piping for splits/leaks.

Its pretty usuall for a TD to smoke a little under hard throttle as its the excess junk in the turbo burning off, but any more then usual could be varius problems. If you are unlucky, its oil getting into the cylinders. Otherwise you will only need your injector settings looked at as stated above.

Got to add, im not to keen on fuel additives as its better to get the problem sorted, then overheat/damage your engine with rip off samples of red 'Injector Cleaner' etc that do very little to fix a problem.

There's a fuel solenoid fitted to the pump. Turn you key to ingition 2 and you should get a clicking noise from the fuel pump for a couple of seconds this will retard and advance the fueling. If it does not click it's faulty. The injectors are also prone for clogging up over time we use a forte diesel treatment to clear this problem up the other brands of treatments don't work

Migtig - black smoke is unburnt fuel, as has been said. Oil getting into the cylinders will make white smoke. btw, the injector cleaner works. It's not as good as a clean and set by your local diesel chappie, but it's ok.

I've had good results from diesel injector cleaners, the quick and dirty way to use it (and most effective is to service the engine, fit a new fuel filter but fill it with injector cleaner not diesel, start it up and floor the throttle until the smoke clears, after that another bottle in half a tank of fuel will finish the job. As has been said, not as good as a proper ultrasonic clean and rebuild but it did make a noticeable difference to my 91 Trooper. I now bung a bottle in every so often to keep em clear. I also had a problem with the wacky fast warm up system fitted to it. This closes a flap in the inlet tract and exhaust to part strangle the engine making it labour thus warming up quicker, I don't use it as the exhaust flap particularly is prone to seizing shut but somehow it had worked partially closed, cue loss of power and excess smoke.

turbo could be knackered, worth checking theres no oil in the intake.

if it`s fitted with an egr,take it off,give it a good clean.
used to get that all the time with them 10 years ago when they were new!!
