yes.....they havent made anything for donkeys years....all bought in and rebadged........played on the SIF name

That explains a lot of things ,,, many thanks , I didnt know that , and Ill bet Im not the only one either.
We used to make rods for SIF when I first started in 1977....I knew Paddy Tibbenham whose grandad founded Suffolk Iron Foundry and made the famous lawnmowers
No i think a lot of people think they are manufacturers......and they do nothing to dispel the myth......I heard it once described as "virtual" manufacturing...

Nothing wrong with SIF stuff in my experience, even knowing that it's eastern import stuff. We've had weld procedures qualified with their stainless wire, including destructive tests etc.
Their TIG brazing wire runs nicely, as does their aluminium wires.
Not sure how variable the quality of material is, but I haven't seen any "bad" stuff. I'm sure it's not "good" but it's generally OK. I've never used any SIF mild steel MIG wire though.
I haven't bought any in a year or two, cos these days I try to specify Bohler, Lincoln or Esab for everything.

At what point did SIF stop producing the Sifbronze wires in the UK?
TBH I always thought they were import wires, based on the prices over the last 5-10 years... I hadn't attached any significance to the SIF name at all, until now! I hadn't made the connection to Suffolk lawn mowers at all
Thats the issue.....it can be good stuff but they can change supplier and you wont know....and usually its because of the price.....as far as I know they dont have any Technical Staff (well if they do they get their data sheets wrong) to oversee what their buyer is doing.
Way back when Lincoln bought a Chinese stainless mill.....it was good stuff....but they occasionally put the wrong label on....or the steel mill got the analysis a bit wrong...but we tested it when it arrived so it didnt get out there.....most dont test as it costs or even have the means of testing.
BOC are the same....we used to make their Everyday products until they saw Chinese prices and wanted us to match them.......they went ahead and changed to chinese and they were awful....it was a big failure plus they had ruined the name....They had to start again with a new range name.
