Should go for it if your mates can help you out with people to courier for and if you are tollerant of other road users even if they do drive BMWs badly and hold you up while they get pulled out of ditches.
I was in work today, but don't like working on the Sabbath. Not religious just like a guaranteed day off. I'm now seeking work that's fixed hours and completely stress free maybe just 3 days a week to leave plenty of time for doing useful stuff.
The firm would give him enough to keep out for a full day if all went to plan. It never did, he would end up working long hours for no extra pay. He was paid by the amount of parcels delivered.
He recons he earns more delivering chineese food 6 - midnight, 6 days a week.
Just packed in my job bloody fed up with it,preparing new cars for dealers for the past eight years (agency) treated like s**t.Got trained on a new Toyota Auris on Friday to fit Mp3 and bluetooth phone kit.goes like this, remove gear lever surround panel, remove radio and side trim, remove 'a' post trim.remove interior light panel, remove glovebox,if we break anything being agency we pay for it !make up kit on bench, into car fit bluetooth unit into space below gear lever, cable tie,run loom up center consol to back of radio, cable tie,run microphone cable from roor panel (alongside interior light) through roof lining down 'a' pillar along behind glovebox down centre consol to bluetooth unit, cable tie all along, drill 32mm hole in glovebox mount Mp3 unit, run cable to radio area,at that point i asked the trainer " how long do we get for this job" 1.25 hrs he said (thats £9.06p at our rate) but it's taken 2.5 hours so far i said and you got to put it all back together yet ! s**t innit he said.He then said " Next week all the subby's (agency workers) are being trained on DAB radio's on Rav's,five hour job and you get three hours for it"at that point i said something that ends in 'off' i aint doin it, to that he said you gotta do it your a subby ! That's when i stormed off, finished the job i was doing packed my tools and told em i'll be in Monday to pick up my tools.
How do they expect a man to do a good quality job and earn a living !? Oh and that time (1.25hrs) includes going into the yard to get the car,go to the stores for the parts, then drive out of the workshop and lazer etch the windows on your way out.Bo*****s to that !
That was one thing I liked about doing auto A/C. The "Book" listed time to do the job. It was shown to the customer. We could usually do it in about 2/3 time and make good $$ without jacking up parts 100%.
Sounds like they treated you like unskilled labor ("You want fries with that?")
I used to do a lot of car audio installation and repair. My back is shot from crawling inside dashboards and trunks. That was back when 8-tracks were still around Helped pay for school, but there was not good $$ in it as a career. Don't miss it much, although it is much easier now (there was no cover plate or wiring kits at the time, had to fab wires, mounts, etc.) Was glad when I switched jobs and did bench work doing factory repairs.
Rusty duuno about down with you but up here they are CRYING out for courier drivers, one local firm has ads going on the radio and will even take you on it you have 6 points on yer licence!
I wouldn't do it though, the pay aint THAT great and you'd been spending all day paranoid trying to meet deadlines.
I'm a self employed delivery driver (not a courier), I deliver single items from one end of the country to the other, not really stressful or anything but I can be away from home for a few days at a time. Can't say I make much money from it but I do other bits and pieces when i'm not drving aswell
Thanks SC BK, the more I think about it the more I don't fancy it,a mate who used to do it said " don't go to London " nowhere to park, congestion charges, camera's on you everywhere it's a nightmare !He said more than once he got back from London and they sent him back there again !One day he went to Swansea three times !
Trouble is you gotta pay about 3 - 4K for a tidy van plus a grand for insurance and there's no guarantee you'll get any work, I think all that would do my head in. I'm most happy in my garage welding up rusty cars and i used to make a tidy living but that was then.
Rusty, if your going to go for it then I can keep an ear out for you. I have Interlink, Parceline, TNT, and Hills in most days, there are shortages of drivers out there.
It's a notoriously cut throat game Rusty but I tell you what, if you could guarantee a no damages service you would be on to a winner. Stick local to start with & see how it goes.
