Any comments on this Bandsaw?

I'm looking for one, but i'm on a tight budget....will this do for cutting box section and mild/stainless pipe upto 3"?

That is completely the wrong tool for what you want to do unless you want to cut them lengthwise What you need is a horizontal band saw.

Does the horizontal one drop down onto the pipe then?

I also want to cut shapes in sheet metal - thats why i thought this would be the best of both worlds?

Horizontal saws can be used upright as well. The maximum width on that saw is 190mm so anything you cut will be under 8" long or wide and they are mostly used for cutting wood into thin sections hence the guide.

I wont be able to do curved/tight cuts and shapes in metal with a chop saw though?

What is a 'tight cut'? Both types of saw have a vice, a short gap, and then a blade, which cuts in straight lines. Both are limited in what they can cut on curves etc. Why not use a cheapo saw for the straight bits and stick to the discs for cutting on a curve?

Or are you meaning you want to cut curved paths through the material - which you can't do with either saw.

Perhaps you need to explain what you are trying to do?

I need to make 'cones' out of sheet metal, so I'll need to cut curved shapes in say 1mm mild steel and stainless.

Also I need to cut upto 3" exhaust pipe at angles.

If the blade is thin enough ob the band saw, I'll be able to cut out shapes in sheet metal wont i?

Or use chop saw/grinder for straight cuts in box/pipe and get a jigsaw for cutting curves in sheet.

Well i have a jigsaw, so thats a start! Whats the easiest way? just clamp the sheet down on the edge of my workbench and cut, then move, cut and move?

That'll do it. If its flapping about too much, you can clamp it to a bit of hardboard or whatever and cut through them both - stops it flapping to some extent.

How are you going to make the cones???

A. - How much is each disc ?
B. - How many cuts do you expect a 1 mm disc to do ?

A/B = cost/ cut,
How many cuts do you expect to make in the next 12mth ?


A bimetal band saw blade (£18) gives me a life of 2000 - 4000 cuts, say 2000 so my cost/ cut = £0.009

Even if we add the cost of a new bandsaw :-

A £200 bandsaw give it a life of 5yrs (mine is 22yrs) = £200/5/2000 = £0.02
So my cost/cut = is sill less than 3p.

Then bend the metal around a pipe to form a cone.

From the look of the ad I reckon that one is for cutting wood, depth of cut 80mm?
it also has a silverline badge on it, best place for it is in the canal with the scooters.

There are some cheap band saws that will cut upright with a detachable table, good for cutting shapes out of sheet, and they can be used horizontally for cutting tubes etc. Not the best solution but if on a budget they do the job. I have one from machine mart, I rarely use it since getting a chop saw, but once in a blue moon it comes in handy. They are a good place to start as they will eventually cut big sections, eg RSJ sized. Albeit slowly.
