I don't think old threads are deleted if you search through the archive there are thousands of old ones.

Anyway if are metal in tubular shape with some sort of flux wrapped around are just slicing torch rods
Someone mentioned "Broco" which makes both torches and rods for exothermic cutting
Arc-Air produce them as well
There are essentially two types
Land and water
The one used outside the water are made out of alluminium tubes with steel rods inside
The underwater ones are made out of copper tubing and again steel rods inside
The coating wrap I think it's just insulation tape of some sort to prevent a strike on the side and or prevent ice forming on it do the pressure .
They use chopper underwater because alluminium will react with water causing an hazardous situation .
It works on the same principle of oxy-fuel cutting torches but on another level.
The power provided by a welder or a cutting torch is used to take the steel rods to the ignition temperature ,the oxygen is opened and the flow will burn the steel rods slowly because the alluminium or copper tube around which slowly melts but the heated steam of metal and oxygen can be used towards anything which will be cut
It's little bit tough as explaination but essentially you are using molten steel and oxygen to cut through

My neighbor used to work with those torches for Hours every day underwater
There is nothing that this thing can't cut through

its usualy known as a "Thermal lance "
ive heard of divers making them using a tube of tig filler wire with an oxy and power connector added to one end

seen a guy cutting 100mm scrap rig parts
looked like a home made set up
consisted of a 1/2"ball,valve, lengths of blue band pipe , with threaded end
packed with lengths of 4mm steel round
this was piped to an oxygen supply "bank"

the guy heated the end up with a hand burner till the end was thoroughly melting and sparkling then opened the ball valve and
among a hail of sparks blew thru the plate and sliced it up albiet roughly
and no electrics involved with this type
obviously the pipe and wires had to be changed when he got too close to the job
unscrew old pipe screw in the new one !

"Groovie "electrode this was used like arc
air to back gouge no air supply , bit like a cel rod with a very powerfull arc envelope ,point rod forward and wash the metal and slag out
seen guys soaking old 6013 in water for piercing plate too ,works if you can see through the steam cloud

I've seen a similar video
A French guy used an air compressor blow valve with quick disconnect on the output side and obviously oxygen supply
He used a car battery to ignite the rods
He cut through rocks
If I'll find the video I will share the link here
I've watched it maybe 3 or 4 years ago

Think that groovie rods are still available ,I think that I've seen Esab champering rods on eBay .
I've used both 6010 and 6013 for this application
Both with the welder almost maxed out
No need to damp the electrodes

Hopefully I will need to have shopping from United States once a year so might be worth
I don't usually need fast freeze electrodes but sometimes I do
And my 6010 are not in good condition , probably because of moisture etc
And also because my welder isn't meant to run them
So it does run them but not properly

Well I have had a quick play with the gouging rods, they eat thin steel, 10mm is a bit slow though, probably a bit unfair as they are only 2.5mm, the big snotty heap is an attempt at piercing, I ran out of rod before it burnt through.

Looking at my test piece now I've cleaned it up it looks more like operator error than lack of penetrating power from the rod, as you can see I moved as I was pushing in, it has cut a groove 3/4 through the steel about 20mm long so if I had held it still it would have gone through.

There was a guy on one of the housy program's who converted an old ice house into a holiday cottage, he used a thermic lance to cut a new door way through 6ft of stone. Worked well but was a filthy job with molten steel and stone spraying everywhere!

Never seen one but there was a bank robbery in london in the early 70's, they cut their way
