This turned up at work on Friday.


I thought Dichloromethane had been banned across the E.U. Dose anyone know what s going on with this stuff? Has it been unbanned? (not sure if that's a real word,but you know what I mean). I'm not sure whether to be glad, cause it works better than the other stuff, or a bit miffed that they think welders are expendable.

The 'chloro' bit of dichloromethane raised an alarm for me (the brake cleaner + welding = phosgene threads that were doing the rounds a while ago)...

Googling dichloromethane + phosgene got this and this

Ironically every tin of brake cleaner i've ever seen has born the legend 'free of chlorinated hydrocarbons'

I`ve got three BCF (Halon 1211) large-extinguishers here; but, they don`t know they`re illegals and are still showing full on the gauge!

Help, in the form of the Fire & Rescue Service, is at least 20 minutes away in this rural area.....so, in the event of fire, if it comes to the choice; loss of my beloved-dogs/house/workshop or the ozone-layer: guess what!

no more dangerous than welding/grinding fumes, O2, argon or dihydrogen oxide, just use correctly.

Abuse/misuse of any compound is the real problem, used correctly most supposed carcinogens need to be drunk/eaten by the gallon daily for years before they would have any potential effect.

IME/reading so far about 99% of all "dangerous" stuff is banned for "environmental" or pressure group fears rather than scientific reasoning.

When I used to be a rep for a welding distributor, I remember that we started selling a vegtable oil???? based anti-spatter, called the works

I remember seeing some data sheets and safety reports on the normal type of Anti-Spatter and it seemed really dangerous. Spray some in a polysterene cup and see what happens! To be honest, I think you already breath enough horrible ****e in when welding, so I wouldn't add to it further with Anti-Spatter gunk. I personally dont think it does much anyway and if you machine is set up properly (Voltage/Wirespeed/Inductance) relationship then you shouldn't get lots of excessive spatter.

Not sure about it being "un"banned Tino...i remember when it got banned they turned the whole plant upside down to retrieve all bottles.... they even found my secret stash....
We're still on the water based stuff now, doesn't work as good as the other one but at least it's less toxic....

Most of the sprays I've tried smell like burning tallow, there was one that smelled quite nice, bet your life that was the toxic one! W/A

The one we use now is usually an esab one, i think thats veg oil based.
The rep showed us the old type sprayed into a plastic machine coffee cup, the bottom of it melted within about 10 seconds.

when do you use this stuff? Never tried it, but as I only go up to maybe 3mm (very rare) and mainly weld 18 guage, would it be overkill?

If it would markedly improve things I will get some and try it. If, on the other hand, it would not make a marked improvement for me then I would rather spend the money on a Biryani one lunch time.
