Anti-Spatter - Different quality types: Advice needed, please.

Hi all.

Please may I have some advice. Can anyone offer their opinion on the different types of anti-spatter available for industrial use in a factory.

The anti-spatter that my colleagues and I use in our place of work (Factory with low end MIG Welding machines) is as poor as I've ever used. After we spray it on our work (average 4 ft x 4ft) and start welding, most of it just evaporates quickly and it is not much better than useless so we then spend more time than I think is neccessary scraping the inevitable spatter off.

What I want to know is, is there a way in which I can determine what quality of anti-spatter we have. I can tell you that a 25 ltr container costs our buyer £22 and the label on the container says 'Premkem', that it is 'ready to use' and is water based. It is supplied by 'OCL' in Kingswinford.

Our buyer has said that his supplier cannot offer any different/better anti-spatter and I am trying to find out, firstly, what would determine a better quality anti-spatter (a certain chemical?) and, secondly, how much more than £22 per 25 ltr container this would cost.

Dont use a great deal of anti spatter as i mostly tig nowadays,
remember it being quite good years back and seems pretty crap and watery nowadays,
might be something to be with legislation and modern accelerants for aerosols?

a bit like how Nitromors used to be great and is now a rubbish watered down poor version

I agree the solvent based anti spatter is/was much better than the water based stuff.
Someone did mention using vegetable oil, you could try thinning some down with a little white spirits or acetone to use in a pump spray.

Thank you, you two. However, I'm kind of after a more technical answer regarding modern day quality of anti-spatter so that I can recommend some to our buyer.

Some one was saying spray on cooking oil was good, would slow rust as well so dual use

you know its really only any good for "helping" to protect jigs. Perhaps the quality has gone down ( I don't really know because I have hardly ever bothered)
It strikes me however that getting the settings right on some decent quality plants (perhaps a training issue) could save a lot of clean up time and add to profits considerably in not buying anti spatter alone what will that save annually ?

A lot of it is welder setup. I've just started using a Lincoln powertec standard not pro, and can get that making hardly any spatter at.most voltage ranges.

Just for the record, our Welders are low-end so all the playing about with the settings makes very little difference.

Well even living wage is over £7 per hour on cost will be considerably more
How long are they cleaning up spatter each week? Month? Year?
The forman or similar might be unable to grasp the concept but a good Synergic mig plant could actually save the firm a lot of hours in costs and increase throughput
Maybe speak to the fd?

Excellent point about foreman being unable to grasp the point about better machines being worthwhile. I think making that point is a battle not worth fighting. However, I think the battle over better quality anti-spatter is....

i have 1 tub of tip dip and an arosol of antisplatter both are 3 yrs old and are still mostly full had them about 3 yrs.

ust dont use the stuff, the stuff that works seems to fume unpleasantly and the stuff that dosent don't work much, torches seem to get addicted to it as well, so just don't use it

Ours is the same but you get less spatter if you turn it up or down slightly, I say less spatter, what I mean is it just wipes off, it helps a lot!

We generally use the Air Liquide weld line or the esab aerosol anti spatter.....I generally prefer the esab, but we buy whichever one is on offer between the two
