Another which mig, circa £600

Sorry for another which mig thread!

I'm starting some work on my 240z and building a workbench etc. I want a mig that will do thin sheet(bodywork) but still be useful for other stuff.

Looking at spending around £600. Its only DIY.

There seems to be so much choice. I do want something that will hold some value and still be able to get bits for in a few years...

Portamig = TechArc =Oxford = BritArc. All made by the same people in York. Different spec levels and minimum amps, but essentially the same machines, and a variety of sellers...

AFAIK R-tech are supposed to be decent, chinese made but with the difference of having support.

However, from a spec point of view, the portamig goes lower and higher than the r-tech, and is cheaper.

The r-tech has a few flashy features if that's your thing.

I don't know how they weld compared to each other, which is the main thing, but I do know I have only heard good things about portamig.

Although I have a R-tech MMA machine and am happy with it, my MIG is the Portamig and I think I made the right choice, just a bit dubious of long term back up for Chinese stuff, I may be wrong with that opinion but it's one I have, like we all do about things.

For the Portamig give Steve a ring at Weldequip...top of page, he will sort it for you and the regulator is included.

can't say whether the internals are the same as i haven't got round to taking the covers off my Oxford Migmaker yet (and i will take some photos when i do), but unlike the portamig and others, the oxford wire feed is on top not on the side which think is a good design.

Portamig, from Steve Weldequip, was my choice and more than happy with it.
