I agree with Cumbriasteve & Yellow aardvark, universal scales used on farms for weighing animal feed & shops for selling all sorts of things. We've some examples in our local museum where they have a street of Victorian shops.

If you tell us you weighed them in I may be a bit pived, maybe a wee tach cross.

The lead weights are worth a fortune, even more so if stamped with the crown. Or The government broad arrow.

The chains are both cow chains for trying cows up in old byers/stalls for the winter or for milking. The chain goes round the animals neck, the toggle goes through one of the smaller loops. The big 'U' snapped loop attached to the stall. The links care all slightly twisted to save catching the animals skin.

Not really used now days.

All the old guys in my village have a set of scales just like that , used for weighing half a goat ,sack of spuds , basket of grapes etc, with a sliding balance on the long horizontal bar where you read off the weight......

Loads still around, often at farm sales sure they will be on eBay, I can get new ones some places still use them.
