Another what is it?

Picked this up today. I know it's a compound slide but I curious as to what is it's exact purpose?
It's very nicely made with 3/8 drive socket couplings stamped with Williams USA on them.




To me it looks like it would be used in conjunction with a grinding wheel for precision sharpening of tooling/ blades ect like a Clarkson tool cutter grinder. That is what it's purpose is going to be for me anyway. I plan to mount it on my GHA tool grinder so it will be a more versatile machine.......

Never seen one but this one is described as a cross slide milling grinding attachment for a mill

Yes that looks very similar is design to mine.

Whats confusing the hell out of me is that its got X and y cross slides, why would you need either on a mill ? I can only think it gets strapped to something else that has neither, perhaps something like a beefy pillar drill
